LlllTiRELL/h ATTACHMENT FOR BECYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,l l6, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed January 27,1897. Serial No. 620,902. (No model.)
To a whom it YIZ/U/Z/ concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. CONVERSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Attachments for Bicycles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an umbrella attachment for bicycles.
The invention has for its object the provision of a means whereby an umbrella may be easily attached to a bicycle for the purpose of protecting the rider from inclement weather.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a means of inclining the umbrella at any angle desired by the rider.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts in the several views shown, in which Figure l is a side view of a portion of a bicycle, showin g my improved attachment fitted thereto and provided with an umbrella. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one section of the attachment removed from the bicycle and which is shown upon a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. i is a plan view of the umbrella-holding section. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same.
The invention consists of two sections of clamp hinged together, one section being adapted to hold the umbrella and the other section being adapted to connect to a suitable portion of the bicycle-frame. The section The lug 3 is formed upon the wing 1 and has pivoted thereto by the pin or rivet a the scrcw-bolt 5. The said bolt 5 enters the openings which are formed within the ends of the said wings and is provided at its free end with the thumb-nut S. Formed upon the opposite end of the said clamp are the lugs 0 and 10,which are provided with the holes 11 and 12. The section for holding the umbrella has formed thereon the lug l3,which is adapted to fit between the said lugs 9 and 10 of the frameclamp, and is loosely pivoted therein by a pin or rivet 7,wl1ich is fitted through the holes 12 and 14. A series of holes 15 are formed within the said lug, any one of which is adapted to register with the hole 11, through which a pin 16 is passed, so as to lock the two parts together at any angle desired. Formed upon the wing 17 of the umbrella-clamp is the lug 1S, and has pivoted thereto by the pin 10 the screw-bolt 20,which is provided at its free end with the thumbscrew 21. A small lug 22 is formed upon the said clamp and the wing 23 pivoted or hinged thereto by the pin 24:. Openings are formed within the free ends of the wings for the reception of the screw-bolt, as shown. Suitably arranged between the wings are the bushings 25, into which the umbrella handle is inserted.
To put the device into practical use, it is clamped to the bicycle-frame 30, as shown at Fig. 1, and secured fast by the thumb-nut. The umbrella-handle is then inserted be tween the bushings and clamped tightly in place by turning the thumb-nut, and by removing the pin 16 the umbrella may be inclined at any desired an gle. After the desired angle is determined the pin is inserted in place, which looks the parts together.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an umbrella-holder for bicycles, conslsting of a disk provided with a series of concentrically-disposed openings, a clampingarm formed integral with said dish, a second clamping-arm jointed to said dish and a bolt passing through the rear ends of said clamping-arms, in combination with a pair of lugs between which the disk is pivotally supported, one of said lugs having a perforation In testimony whereof I affix my signature which is in circular alineinent With the openin presence of two Witnesses. ings in said disk, a pin passing through said FRANK CONVERSE perforation and adapted to en gage any one of 1 5 said openings, and means for clamping said Vitnesses:
lugs to the bicycle-frame, substantially as M. A. HOBAN,
described.
P. B. REILLY.
