Be it known that I, BENNIE C. LEONARD, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of l\lassachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle- Handles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide a construction of handle-bar post for bicycles, which construction will permit of the handle-bar being projected forward as well as downward, to secure a position of the handles most advantageous for fast riding.

To the above end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts recited in the appended claims.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a sufficient portion of a bicycle to illustrate the application of the invention thereto the adj ustment of parts being that which obtains when the handlebar is moved forward and down. Fig. 2 is similar view showing a different adjustment. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

The letter Cl, designates the steering-head of the bicycle-frame, and h the hollow stem of the front fork, which stem extends through said steering-head and is split at its upper part and embraced by a clamping-collar b.

In carrying out my invention I provide a jointed handlebar post whose lower member c fits within the stem 17 and is fastened therein by tightening the collar b". The other memher, 0, of said post carries at its upper end a double-clamp collar comprising apart d, embracing the post and clamped thereto by a bolt d, and a portion (1 extending at right angles to the part cl and embracing the handle-bar e, which is fastened in said collar 61 by tightening a bolt 6, passed through ears of the latter. The two members of the jointed post are formed with ears 0 0 one of which has a pivot-stud c and the other a recess or socket c for engagement of said stud.

bolt f extends through the ears 0 and 0 passin g centrally through the socket c and the stud c and the bore of one ear is screwthreaded, whereas the bore of the other car is left smooth, so that by engaging the screwthreads of the bolt with those of one j oint-ear and turning said bolt up the two members of the post will be clamped together.

The handle-bar here shown is of the buckhorn type, and it will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that by turning the outer member of the post forward to a position approximately at right angles to the inner member a low position of the handles is obtained and they are moved forward from the position they would ordinarily occupy, which is shown in The clamp-collar (1 may be on either the front or rear side of the post, according to the adjustment of handle-bar required.

hat I claim as my invention is as follows:

1. In a bicycle, the combination of the hollow fork-stem, a jointed handle-bar post one member of which fits in said stem, means for clamping the other member at different an gular positions with respect to the member in the stem, a clamp-collar rotatively adjustable on that other member, and the handle bar fitting through said collar and adapted to be set at different positions therein, substantially as described.

2. In a bicycle, the combination with the hollow fork-stem b, of the jointed handle-bar post having its lower end 0 fitting said stem, the collar 1) for clamping the said post in the stem, the double-clamp collar comprising the part d adapted to be clamped on the upper end of the post and the clamp 61 at a right angle to the clamp d, and the handle-bar 6 extending through said clamp 01 and adapted to be adjustably secured thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
