Description

No. 639,524; Patented'Dec. l9, I899. 1 w. CLARK.
PLOW CLEVIS.
[Application filed Oct. 5, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES ATEN Fries.
WILLIAM CLARK, OF I-IILLSVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASS IGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WY. A. DOAN, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW-CLEVISQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,524, dated December 19, 1899.
Application filed Oc ober 5, 1 8 9 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsville, in the county of Livingston and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Clevises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to plow-clevises.
The object of the invention is to provide a plow-clevis which may be easily disconnected from the plow-beam when occasion requires.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully. de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a plow-beam, illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clevis removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clevisbolt. Fig. 4is an end view of the plow-beam.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the plow-beam, 2 the clevis, and 3 the bolt. The plow-beam has formed in its forward end a socket 4 to receive an inwardlyprojecting stud 5, formed on the clevis. The clevis has its arms formed with recesses 6, that are adapted to be engaged by the squared portions 7 of the bolt.
8 denotes a spring secured to one of the sides of the plow-beam and having its arms bent atright angles to its body portion and adapted to bear against the sides of the arms of the clevis opposite the sides havingthe recesses. This spring serves to hold the clevis in engagement with the bolt, while the stud at the forward end of the clevis, by having an Serial No. 732,640. (No model-l engagement with the socket in the end of the plow-beam, prevents the lateral swing of the forward end of the clevis.
9 9 denote two crank-arms pivoted in the upper and lower sides of the plow-beam, and 10 denotes a bail connecting said arms. A rope or chain 11 is secured to the bail and extends to within convenient reach of the plowman.
Then it is desired to detach the horse from the plow, by drawing upon the cord the free ends of the bell-crank will remove the arms of the clevis from engagement with the bolt and permit the clevis to pull from engagement with the plow-beam.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is K The combination with a plow-beam having a socket in its end, of a clevis having a stud to engage said socket and provided with recesses in its arms, a bolt extending through the plow-beam and engaging said recesses, and bell-crank levers pivoted to the plowbeam and adapted to engage the ends of the arms and swing them from engagement with the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
7 WILLIAM CLARK. 'Witnesses:
EDWARD LowERY, J. I. HILL.
