ADJUSTABLE YSINGLETREE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,443, dated September 29, 1891. Application tiled May 14, 1891. SerialNo. 392,693. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, SosTHENEs MoEsoHLER, of Riceville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Singletree, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved adj ustable singletree. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line w .fr in Fig. 3.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable singletree which may be lengthened or shortened to suit the animal attached to it and the work to be done.

M v invention consists in a pair of rods pivoted together and connected by the pivotal l bolt with the clevis and attached at their outer ends to an adjustable bar, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.

The rods A A are provided with eyes d al upon opposite ends. The eyes d are received in the clevis B and secured by the pole C. The outer ends of the rods A A' are received in clevises D and secured by bolts b. The adjustable bar E is formed of two parts c o', the said parts having at their outer ends eyes d, which receive the bolts b in the clevises D. The part c of the bar E is provided with a transverse lip e, which is adapted to enter notches f, formed in the face of the part c of the bar E. The inner end of the part c of the bar E is bent at right angles and furnished with a transverse mortise for receiving the part c. Upon the part c of the bar E is placed a slide F, which is capable of receiving both of the parts of the bar E, and the said slide F is drilled transversely to receive a spring-key g, which enters a semicircular notch h at the back of the part c.

The length of the singletree is adj Listed by withdrawing the spring-key g, removing the slide F fromthe end of the part c', sliding the part c of the bar E through the angled and mortised end of the part c, and inserting the transverse lip e in one of the notches fof the part c of the bar E, replacing the slide F and inserting the spring-key g.

It is obvious that my improved singletree can be adjusted within wide limits to accommodate it to animals of different sizesand to adapt it for such work as is required to be done in narrow places-for example,vin tobacco, corn, cotton,or sugar-cane fields-also for plowing near fruit-trees, vines, &c.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A singletree consisting in a bar formed in two parts adjustable toward and from each other to permit the length of the bar to be changed, and two rods pivoted together at their inner ends and at their outer ends pivoted to the ends of the said bar, whereby the singletree may be shortened or lengthened to suit the animal or the work, substantially as shown and described.

2. A singletree consisting in a bar formed of two sections adj ustably connected at vtheir inner ends, two rods pivoted at their outer ends to the ends of the said bar, a bolt connecting the inner ends of the said rods, and a clevis on the said bolt, substantially as shown and described.

3. In an adjustable singletree, the combination of the rods A A', having eyes at opposite ends, the bolt C, the clevis B, the clevises D, the adjustable bar E, formed ot the parts c c', the part c being provided with an angled and mortised end and furnished with notches along its face, the part c being provided with a transverse lip efor the engagement of the notches, the slide F, and the spring-key g, substantially as specified.
