UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JEFFERSON WHALEN AND JOHN FRANKLIN VARNER, OF PORT- LAND, OREGON, ASSIGNORS TO GEORGE O. HALE AND MORTON OLL- MAN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
WASHING AND CLEANING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 639,475, dated December 19, 1899.
Application filed May 25, 1899. Serial No. 718,222. (No model.)
To [tZZ whom 2125 may concern/.-
Be it known that we, THoMAs JEFFERSON WHALEN and JOHN FRANKLIN WARNER, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved \Vashing and Cleaning Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' The object of the invention is to provide a [0 new and improved washing and cleaning device for use on windows, walls, and other surfaces and which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to enable the operator to supply the desired amount of water to Is the washer or to the surface imdertreatment to insure proper cleaning and to allow of subsequent ready drying of the washed surface.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented. in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts inall the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The improved washing and cleaning device is provided with a scraper Aand awasherB, secured in holders 0 and D, respectively, attached to or forming part of a frame F, to which is secured a reservoir F, provided at one end with a socket G for receiving the end of a handle H under control of the operator to enable the latter to use and manipulate the device on the surface to be cleaned.
The scraper A is preferably made in the form of a strip of rubber, and the washer B is preferably made in the form of apiece of felt, and both the scraper and washer project a suitable distance from their holders, as is plainly indicated in the drawings, the scraper and washer standing at an angle to each other and at an angle to the longitudinal center of the handle H in order that the scraper and washer may be applied at the proper angle to the surface to be cleaned.
The reservoir F is preferably formed of two hemispherical disks secured at their bases and formed with a partition F, extending from the upper end of the reservoir a short distance below the middle thereof to divide the reservoir into two compartments F F in communication with each other at the bottom of the reservoir. A filling-plugI is arranged in the middle of one of the reservoir-disks to allow of filling the reservoir with water. The upper end of the compartment F is pro vided with an outlet F, leading to adeflector F formed on the frame E and arranged to deflect the water upon the washerB or directly upon the surface under treatment.
By having the partition F arranged as shown when a quick downward movement is given to the handle the water is forced or thrown by the movement around the lower end of the partition and up into the compart- 7o ment F and as the partition confines the wa: ter to this compartment it readily flows up to the outlet.
The device is operated as follows: hen the reservoir F has been filled with water and closed by screwing up the plug I, then the operator in using the device takes hold of the handle H and applies the washer B on the surface to be cleaned, and in order to moisten said washer and the surface under treatment it is necessary for the operator to give a quick downward movement to thehandle H, so that the water in the reservoirFis caused to flow up in the compartment F and out through the opening F under the deflector F which directs the discharged water to the washerB and the surface to be cleaned. This can be repeated as often as necessary until the de sired amount of water has been squirted out of the reservoir and upon the surface under 0 treatment. \Vhen the surface has been washed by the application of water and the washer B, it can be readily dried by the operator turning the device over, so as to bring the scraper A in contact with the surface to 5 be cleaned. Now it will be seen that when the device is in this position, as the partition F separates the main portion of the compartment F from the outlet F, there is no danger of water passing out of the reservoir F, rec
as most of the water is now contained in the compartment F instead of in the compartlnent F as is the case when the washer B is in use.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a washing and cleaning device, a reservoir having a partition extending from the upper end of the reservoir downward to form two compartments in communication with a each other at the bottom, one of the compartments having a discharge-opening at the upper end, the arrangement being such that the water is discharged by the operator giving a quick jerk in a downward direction to the device, substantially as described.
2. A washing and cleaning device provided with a reservoir havinga partition extending 0. A washing and cleaning device, compris- Y downward to a point below the middle of the reservoir, to form two compartments in communication with each other at the bottom of the reservoir, one of the compartments being provided at its upper end with an outlet, a filling-plug for said reservoir, holders held on the upper end of the reservoir, a scraper iitted into one of the holders, and a washer secured in the other holder, substantially as shown and described.
it. A washing and cleaning device, comprising ahandled reservoir formed of dished disks united at their bases and having a partition extending between the disks from the top downward, to form two compartments in communication with each other at the bottom of the reservoir, one of the compartments being provided at its upper end with an outlet, a filling-plug for said reservoir, holders held on the upper end of the reservoir, a scraper fitted into one of the holders, a washer secured in the other holder, the scraper and washer standing at an angle to each other and at an angle to the longitudinal centerof the handle and a deflector over the reservoir-outlet to direct the water upon said washer, as set forth.
