UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE WARREN B. PAGE, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,972, dated November as, 1899. Application filed July 9, 1898. Serial No. 685,498. (No model.)
To atZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN B. PAGE, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to clasps such as are used in connection with hose-supporters, &c., and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and effective clasp the parts of which are adapted to be readily connected and disconnected and when connected will be free from liability to separate accidentally, the socket member of the clasp being free to rotate or swing freely on the stud member, the latter serving as the axis of the swinging motion of the socket.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a view showing a hose-supporter provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a side View of the socket member. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, detached. Fig. 4 represents a section on line 4i 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a side view of the stud member. Fig. 6 represents a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The same letters and numerals of reference indicate the same'parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 00 represents the socket member, and b the stud member, of my improved clasp. The socket member comprises a fiat marginal portion 2, having means, such as a slot 3, for engagement with a strap, a dome 4, struck up from the piece of material of which the marginal portion 2 forms a part, and a series of fingers 5, integral with the dome and formed by cutting tongues at the base of the dome and bending said tongues inwardly, the front ends or points of the tongues being formed of the metal at the junction of the dome with the margin 2 being bent into the concavity of the dome, as shown in Fig. 3, so that they will engage the outside of the contracted neck 6 of the stud member, as shown in Fig. 4. Two or any larger number of these tongues 5 may be employed, their arrangement being such that they cooperatein grasping the stud member and preventing its accidental separation from the socket. I find four a suitable number.
I prefer to locate the fingers at uniform distances apart,so that the stud will be uniformly held at all points.
The stud member, as here shown, comprises a single piece of metal havinga flat marginal portion 7 which is integral with the stud, the latter being a boss of met-a1 pressed ontwardly from a plate of which the fiat marginal portion 7 forms apart. WVhenthe members are connected, the fiat marginal portion 2 of the socket bears on theflat marginal portion 7 of the stud, the whole forming a clasp which is neat and compactin appearance, and whereby the socket member is adapted to turn freely on the stud member, according to the direction of pull of the straps attached to the fiat marginal portions,so that the members can adjust themselves to the angles of the said straps. The stud member is here shown as provided with strap- engaging slots 8, 8, and 9, the latter being segmental.
I claim-- -A garment-supporter clasp comprising in its construction a socket member having a dome, fingers projecting inwardly at the base of the dome, and a flat marginal flange surrounding the dome and having a slot for the attachment of a strap; and a stud member formed to enter the dome and engage said fingers and havinga fiat marginal portion formed to bear against the marginal portion of the socket member, said flat marginal portion of the stud member being provided with a slot outside of or beyond the edge of the socket member when the two members are connected, whereby said members are adapted to rotate partially relatively to each other without bringing the metallic portions of said members into rubbing contact with the strap portions of the garment-supporter.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
