WILLIAM LINDSEY, or koBnItLIN, oHIo.
Leners Patent No. 63,7532, amenait 9, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN CATTLE PUMPS.
'ro ALI. wHoM I'r MAY-conocen:
Be it known that I, W. LINDSEY, of Oberlin, in the county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful improvementsin CattlePumps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the` construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- V Figure l is a side view of the pump.
Figure 2 is a front view.
Figure 3 is a top view.
Figure 4 isv a vertical section.
Like'letters of reference refer to like partsin the views.
This apparatus consists of a metallic cylinder, which is constructed in two sections, A B', fig. 1. The upper section is simply aplain cyl-inder,and about one-third the length of B. In section VB is arranged a spiral spring, C, g. 4, the upper end of which is connected to an adjustable collar or washer, D, fitted to the inside of the cylinder, and inwhich it moves upward'and downward, as will hereafter be shown. The lower end ofothis spring is attached to the side'of the 'cylinder by the links b, and by the'means of which the adjustable collar or washer is forced upward E is a-plunger fitted to the inside of the cylinder, and packed with any suitable material, in order that it may be tight. F is a tube or pipe fastened to the top of theplunger, and which passes through the top and opens on the inside of the plunger with a conical-shaped,enlargement, G. I, is a brace surrounding the enlargement G, the top of which is fastened to the pipe, and the'bottom spreads out, so asvto fill the inside of the pistou, as shown in the drawing J is a sleeve encasing the tubeF, thelower end of which is fastened to the top of the plunger, and upon the upper end rest the .arms K, tig. 2. To these arms are hinged iu any suitable manner the platforms L, one on cach side, as indicated. The 'lower or free end of the platformrests upon the arms M, and upon which they slide onfric'tion-rollers, c, for a purpose as willrhereafter be shown.A N are standards, between which the` pump is placed upon the base O; these standards are connected to the arms K by the links l), and in which the arms slide upwardand downward, and thereby guiding and retaining the platform in proper position. l i i Having thusdescribed the construction of the pump, the operation'of the same is as follows: The pump is placed in thc well or water'so it shall be immersed more or less, according to the depth of the water or the nature of thevsurronnding ground, or so as to bring the arms M near the ground. When in this positionfthe cattle to be watered walk up the platform to the trough Q, and in so doing their weight depresscs the inner ends of the platforms, and these, as above said, being attached to the arms K, andthese arms in turn connected to the pipe F, forces the plunger down towards the bottom of the cylinder; this downward action ofthe piston forces the water' up through the pipe F, and from which it flows out of the bent end into the trough above, as'
the piston or plunger ascends by the reaction of the spring referred to. When relieved from its downward pressure by the cattle moving from the platform, the valve a opens by the outside pressure of the water, vand through which it ows and lls the cylinder, and thus supplying it with water as before, and s o onalternately, as the piston descends, the valve is closed and the 'water forced up through the pipe into the troughs, and as the piston rises the valve opens and the water flows in,vto be again elevated to the troughs. By the means of suitable pipes connected'to the apparatus, Water may be conveyed to the house, barn, or other building, or to any adjoining place where the water may he requiredz I What I claim'as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The spring C, link b, valve a, and collar D, as arranged in combination with theiplunger E, pipe F, and cylinders A B, for the purpose and in the manner as specified.
2. The sleeve J, platforms L, and arms M, aaai-ranged in combination Awith the pipe F, plunger E, spring C, for the purpose and in the manner as described.
I 3. Standards N, links P, arms K, and trough Q, as arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
