Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
, JOHN G. GARRETSON, OF SALEM, IVOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
l 'Specification forming part of -Letfms Patent No. 4 l ,291, dated January 19, 1864.`
To all whom it may, concern,.-
Be it known that l, J oHN G. GARnErsoN,
of Salem, in the county of Henry and Stateof Iowa, have invented a new and useful'lmprovement in Force-Pumps; and l do hereby declare that the fol-lowing is a full and exact, description thereof', reference being had to the' accompanying 'drawings and thenlet'ters of reference, marked thereon, in whichl Figure lis a vertical elevation and outside View of the whole `pump ready for use, with a wooden stem, K, as a support to theV handle, which is now supposed to be descendit] g. Fig, 2 is a longitudinal seetionalview showing the plunger within the cylinder and the'partit-ion marked e dividing' the` tube c in two equal he position here shown is that of the' Partsdownward movement ofthehandleand ascent of tlieplunger-jf Fig. 5 -isthe same ricnrprc# 4cisely, only the handle is supposed to be lifted,
and thereby forcing the pipe l) to the opposite side of the .pipe C to receive the water from below the plunger. n i
' The peculiarity of my'inrention consists in making that part of the tube c entering into the cylinder and connecting with the plunger B doublc-t hat js, divided longitudinally inte two equal parts by the partition c terminating at g, while the pipe D is a single't'ube and l of the pipe, while the other is left open to revceive the-Water, the currents Vot which are vclearly indicated bythe arrows, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
'lo enable others skilled inthe art to make and. use my pump, I wi-l-lmore particularly describe the saine, referring to the drawings l and the letters thereon.
A, Fig. l, is thc'c'ylinder or p u mp-barrel say four inches in diameter and seven or eight yinches long-as adapted to wells twenty-tlve or ythirty feet deep, made ot' iron, brass, or yother suitable material, and when put together has only one opening, and that is where the tube c, Fig. 2, enters, on the lower end of which Y is seen the plunger B', Figs. 2 and 3, and at p to form a pivot to the links it', which may be' about one and three-fourths inch long from center to'center. The other end of these links is pivoted at f, which is tirmlyfconnected with lthe pipe I), extending to the top of vthe well, l where it is fastened to the handle H, Fig.l 1.
tube from the plunger B to the top of the well,v
the 'Water now passing out of the' upper part oftheI cyliuderin tli'edirection indicated by the arrows. AThen by lifting up the handle the pressure falls on the links i i and brings f and g as near together as they can come un'til the pipe. D is arrested in its further lat eral progress by coming in contact with the other side of the pipe C and partition e, as will be better seen in the position 'of Fig. 3, thus forming a continuous tu'be from the plunger B to the top of the well. Thus alternately bearing down and lifting the handle, you change the pipe D from side to side, and always to that side next to 'discharge its water, and so bring the water up in almost direct lines, Without quirks or short turns` :and completely dispensing with anything like Valve or cut-ot,and
forming a double-acting forcepumpfyielding a nearly or quite continuous stream of water while in aotion, but when left at rest immediately lets all its water descend t a common level, that being1 useful in summer to keep the water cool, and in winter to prevent its freezing. This pump, being a force-pump, must be immersed in the water, and as it receives its water fromthe topis not likely to be obstructed by gravel or mud being drawn into the cylinder.
l contemplate using my pump in all situations where water is to be brought from a lowerto a higher level ot' any height, having due reference to the well-known iawsof hyl draulios in adapting the diameter of the cylinder and length of the stroke to the heightthe water has to be raised. I also propose adapting my invention to fire-engines.'
What Iolaiim as my invention, and desire to secure bylietters Patent, is-
The joint formed by the parts f en@ g with the links i ,Fig. l7 in the position shown in thedrawings when acted onby the handie'H,
Fig. 1K,` and made to move the pipe D alter- `double-acting force-pump without valve orA cut-oit.
