GEARING FOR PUIVIPING-JACKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,194, dated October 3, 1899.
` Application filed November 22, 1898. Serial No. 697,181. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM O. WOOD- WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Gearing for Pumping-Jacks;l and I do declare the following to be a fullclear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved pumping-jack or power-head for deep-Well pumps; and the object is'to provide a simple, eflcient, and reliable device of this character.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved pumping-jack. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the stuing box or head and rod removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the complete jack.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the frame or casting in which the power-shaft 2 is journaled. One end of this shaft carries the usual tight and loose pulleys, and on the other end is xed a pinion 3, which meshes with a spurgear 4, fixed on a counter-shaft 5, also journaled in the frame vertically above and parallel with the driving-shaft 2. In the spur gear-wheel 4 is journaled a wrist-pin 6, on which is fixed a smaller gear-wheel 7, which in turn meshes with an internally-toothed annulus 8, fixed in the frame parallel with the spur-gear 4, so that a planetary motion is imparted to the gear-wheel 7, having given to it a rotary motion on its axis by the annulus and a concentric movement in its own plane by the larger gear-wheel. The face of the The outer face of the smaller spuregear 7 is also provided with a wrist or crank pin 13, to which is pivoted the upper end of the pump-rod 14, which extends through the head l5, so that a true vertical movement is imparted to the pump-rod, the double movement of the spur-gear 7 causing its wrist-pin to reciprocate in a vertical plane, the limit of movement corresponding to the throw of the wrist-pin 6 plus the throw of the wrist-pin 13.
I am aware that a planet-ary gearing consisting of a iiXed and internally-toothed annue.
lus and an axial shaft provided with a crank carrying a pinion in mesh with said annulus and having a wrist-pin to which a reciprocating rod is pivoted is not new per se, as such a construction is shown in the patent to E. Burke, No. 399,492, and therefore I do not of course lay claim thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what-I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pump-gearing, the frame l', the horizontal parallel shafts 2 and 5 journaled in said frame, the pinion 3 fixed on said shaft 2 and the gear-wheel 4 fixed on the superimposed shaft 5 and in mesh with said pinion, the wrist-pin 6 journaled in said gear-wheel 4, and the gear-wheel 7 fixed on said Wristpin and formed with a bearing-flange 11, the internally-toothed annulus 8 fixed on the frame, in mesh with the gear-Wheel 7, and formed with a concentric track l2, the wristpins 9 9 carried by the gear-wheel 4, the guide-rollers lO 10 mounted on the wrist-pins 99 and ltogether with the flange 11 having a bearing on the said track l2, the crank-pin 13 fixed on the gear-wheel 7,V and the rod 14 pivoted to said crank-pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM C. WOODWARD. Witnesses:
GEO. H. WooDwARD, C. H. JoNEs.
