UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. OllRlEN, OF NElV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ISAAC A. ROSE, OF SAME PLACE.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,034, dated September 12, 1899.
Application filed July 6,1899. Serial No. 722,961. (No model.)
To (LZZ 1072/0722 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. OBRIEN, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Puz-.
zlc, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in puzzles comprising a box and a die; and the object is to provide a puzzle of this character with a box so arranged that after inserting the die it will be diflicult for a person not understanding the proper manipulation to discharge the die from the box.
I will describe a puzzle embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2 of a puzzle embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 3 is a top View. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking upward; and Fig. 5 is a section showing the box as tilted to discharge the die.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of the box, 2 the top, and 3 the bottom, the top and bottom being rigidly secured to the body portion.
Depending from the top 2 is a dischargetube 4, which registers at its upper end with an opening 5 through the top. On the inner end of the tube at one side is an extension 6, which forms a stop for the die, as will be hereinafter described. Secured to the inner side of the bottom 3 in line with the tube 4 is a block 7 ,havingavertical notch 8 at one side which is adapted to receive the die 9 to direct it to the tube 4 for discharging. Divergent strips 10 are secured to the bottom 3 and are designed to guide the die to the notch 8. It
will be noted that the space between the lower end of the tube 4 and the top of the block '7 is much greater than the thickness of the die, so that when the die is inserted it may fall out to one side into the box.
In operation to remove the die from the box the box is to be tilted in such direction as to permit the die to place itself between the guides 10. Then by tilting the boxin the opposite direction the die will fall into the not-ch 8, and then by still further tilting the box the die will be directed into the tube 4 by the stop 6, so that the die may fall outthrough the tube. In tilting the box a person may place his thumb on the top 2 and his fingers on the bottom 3, and to insure the placing of the thumb in the proper position a suitable mark may be placed on the top, as indicated 1. A puzzle, comprising abox, a tube within the box and secured to the top thereof and" registering with an outward opening through the top, a notched block secured to the bottom of the box in line with the tube, and a movable object to be placed in and removed from the box, substantially as specified.
2. A puzzle, comprising a box, a tube se cured to the inner side of the top of the box and registering with an opening through said top, a stop on the inner end at one side of said tube, a block secured to the bottom of the box and having a notch opposite the stop, and a die or similar object, substantially as specified.
3. A puzzle, comprising a box, a tube sesured to the top of said box and extended in ward, the said tube registering with an opening through the top, a stop extension on the inner end of said tube, a notched block secured to the bottom in line with the tube, guide-strips secured to the bottom for directing a die to the notch on the block, and a die, substantially as specified.
