COMBINED CIGARETTE-BOX AND MATCH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedAprrQ, 1912.
Application filed January 9, 1912. Serial No. 670,167.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ARTHUR Q, lVALsH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Cigarette-Box and lVtatch-IIolder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.,
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combined cigarette box and match holder, which is very simple in construction and arranged to hold cigarettes and matches in such a manner that the l'matches are not liable to contaminate the cigarettes, and the matches and cigarettes can be removed from the box and holder independent one of the other and only at the time the cover is open. lFor the purpose mentioned use is made of a box having a cover, a match receptacle in the said box and extending lengthwise therein, one end of the said match receptacle extending in the opening in one end of the box, and a closing plate for the said match receptacle attached to the said cover and adapted to pass over the end of the match receptacle at the time the cover is in a closed position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is ,rel'n'esentcd inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this slnarilication, in which similar characters otl re'lerence indicate corresponding' parts in all the views.
Figiire il is a perspective view-:ot the combined cigarette box and match holder held /f'ii position by the uscrwith thecovcr in an W open position for wit'h'lra val of a cigarette and a match; Fig. 2' is an end view of the combined cigarette box and match holder 40 \vith the'covcr shown partly closed; ltig. 55 is an enlarged cross section ot' the-same with the cover in a closed posit-ion; and ltig. 't is an enlarged longitudinal section ot' the same on the line /l--Llotl ltig. 2.
15 The cigarette box consists cssentiallyof a box bodvAliavin'g a hinged cover l, and the said box body A is approximately of the usual sixe t'or containing' cigarettes (l, usually ten, in number, the box body 'A also containing a. tixed match holder in the. lorm ot a tubular receptacle D adapted tocon- 4tain matches l0. As shown in Fig. 3, the tubular receptacle D is arranged lengthwise of the box and takes up the space ol. ap-
packing tour cigarettes in the bottom por' 5 proximatcly a single cigarette, to permit of' tion of the box alongside the receptacle D and to permit of packing six cigarettes in the upper portion of the box body' with one of the cigarettes resting on top ofthe receptacle D. l
The box body A, the cover B as Well as the receptacle D Aare preferably made of paper and the box body A consists of an outer section A to which is fastened an inner section A2 extending a distance above the outer section A', and `the rear side of the outer section A is connected at the rear side of the cover B by a hinge F, usually of a flexible strip of material such as papeiil or the like to permit of swinging the cover B into `an open or a closed position relative to the box body A, the cover B when in a closed position resting on the upper edges of the outer section A.
The tubular receptacle D extends the length of the innersection A2 of the box body A and is glued or pasted to the front, side and bottom of the box body, and one end D of the said receptacle Dv is preferably closed and attached to the corresponding endvof the inner section A. The other open vend D2 of the receptacle D extends into an opening A formed in the correspondingcnd olthe inner section A2 of the box body A, and the said opening A3 registers with an opening A" formed in the adjacentl end of the outer section A 'so that matches E can pass througl'i the opening A4 into the recep' tacle D or be removed therefrom by slightly tilting the box to cause the matches to slide out of the receptacle and through the said opening i It. A recess A is formed bet-Ween the apertured ends of theioute.' and inner sections A and A2 of the box body A, and
into this recess A5 is adapted to pass aiclosing plate (l attached to the cover l at the inside thereof so that when t-he cover B is swung into a closed position, the plate-(i passes into the said recess A5 and thus closes the receptacle D.
(n the outer surface ot the, end of the outer section A of the box body A. adjaf cent the opening A4 is arranged a striking surface Il for lighting a match thereon in the usual manner. v
ln practice the box body A is tilted with cigarettes (l and a corresponding number of matches [C are filled into the receptacle D so that the purchaser of the package is provided with the usual number of cigarettes and also wit-h matches for lighting the cigarettes. When the cover B is sWung into an open position a cigaretteCcan be conveniently removed from the box body A, and by slightly vtilting the package some of the matches E will slide out through the opening A4 a sufficient distance to permit the user to conveniently withdraw one match, and then on tilting the box in the opposite direction the remaining matches will return into the receptacle D to permit closing of the cover B so that the closing plate G closes the receptacle D. The user can now strike the match on the surface H to light the cigarette Withdrawn from the package. The above-described operation can now be repeated until the cigarettes and matches are all used up, after which the box' is thrown away being of no further use.
The combined cigarette box and match holder shown and described is very simple in construction and can be cheaply manufactured, and atthe same time the purchaser of the package is provided both With cigarettes and matches for lighting the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined cigarette box and match holder, comprising a box body having an opening in one end, a match holder in the form of a tubular receptacle secured in the said box` body at the bottom thereofl andhaving an open end registering with the said opening in the box body, a cover for said box body, and a closing plate carried by said cover and adapted when the cover is closed to pass between the wall of the box body at the said opening, and the said open end of the tubular receptacle to close the latter.
2. A combined cigarette box and match holder, comprising a box body having an exterior section and an interior section extending a distance above the exterior section, the sections being provided at one end with registering openings and the sections' forming between them a recess at the said registering openings,v a cover hinged on the said exterior section and provided with a flange adapted to pass into the said Vrecess to close the said openings, and a tubu-v body at the bottom and extending length.
wise of the box at one side thereof, the said receptacle having "an open end arranged at t-he opening in the inner section of said box body, a cover for said box body, and a closing plate for the said open end of the match receptacle, the said closing plate being connected with the cover at the inside theeoic and adapted when the cover is closed to extend between the sections of the box body at said registering openings.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this speciiication in` the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR Q. WALSH.
