SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,098, dated March 14, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot or Leg Rests; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to foot or leg rests;

and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive device of this character that will conduce to the comfort of the person and greatly rest his limbs while he is in a sitting position;

With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken through one of the posts of the supporting-frame and a portion of the leg or foot supporting block, showing the manner of pivoting the said block to the post. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the same parts and taken at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 2.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the supportingframe, which in the present instance consists of the sills 2, connected by the cross-pieces 3, the posts 4, and the braces 5 and the connecting-bar 6. If desired, the sills may be of rocker form, as shown; but this is not essential, simply the preferred construction.

7 denotes the foot or leg supporting block, which has at its ends laterally-projecting lugs 8, that embrace the posts and permit of a sliding movement of said block on said posts. The posts are provided with vertical rows of perforations 10 to receive pins 11, that extend through said perforations and into sockets 12 in the block, thereby permitting of a rocking movement of said block with respectv to the posts.

By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the pin 11 acts as afulcrum, on which the block 7 rocks, while the lugs 8 8 extend on either side of the post 4, as shown, and serve to limit the rocking motion of the block 7.

In order to prevent the pins from working out, I provide the hinged latches 13, which when swung down into position cover the heads of the outer ends of the pins and prevent their accidental displacement from the posts. The block is preferably formed with concaved or recessed portions 14, which may be upholstered, as shown in the drawings. The recesses of the block may be of any suitable length, extending from the ankle to the 'knee of the leg.

WVhen it is desired to adjust the block to suit the position of the person using the rest, the latches are swung up to expose the pins, which are withdrawn from the block and from the posts, and the block is then moved up or down to the'desired position. The pins are now inserted through the holes of the posts and into the sockets of the block and the latches swung down in to the position shown in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What I claim. is-

1. In a foot or leg rest, the combination with the frame having Vertical posts provided with vertical rows of perforations, a foot or leg block arranged between said posts and provided with laterally-projecting studs embracing said posts, pins inserted through one set of alined perforations and engaging the block to permit said block to have a rocking movement, and latches pivoted to said lugs to cover the outer ends of said pins and thereby prevent any accidental displacement, substantially as set forth.
