COMBINATION SEAT AND TABLE.
; Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed Ma 4,'191'7, Serial No. 166,424. Renewed June 6, 1916. 7 Serial No. 238,622.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY S. .AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Seats and Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined seat and table and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby the same may be readily converted into a table or a seat when desired.
. Another object of this invention is the provision of a pair of relatively spaced end members having a board pivotally connected thereto, which is adapted to be swung into a horizontal position to form a table, and which may be readilyswung to a substan tially vertical position to form a back rest for the seat.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means for locking the board in a substantially horizontal position and upon the end members to form a table, which will prevent it from becoming accidentally converted from a table into a seat.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a novel means for pivotally connecting the board to the side members whereby the board may be swung into ,a vertical position upon either side of the end members for the purpose of making a seat, which will be accessible from either side thereof, when desired. A still further object of this invention is the provision of a combination seat and table of the above stated character, which. shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a seat constructed in accordance with my invention, 7 I
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a table con structed in accordance with my invention,
Fig.3 is a front elevation of a seat,
Fig.4 is a transverse sectional view of the seat,
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means for pivotally connectingthe board to the side members,
Fig. 6 is a detail elevation illustrating arms for connecting the board to the'side members,
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of a modified means for connecting the arms to the side members.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates substantially U-shaped end members which have their web portions 2 disposed uppermost to form arm rests. Transversely extending members 3 connect the arm portions of the substantially U- shaped members together and have their ends turned downwardly to form supporting feet 4. The members 3 are connected by a longitudinally extending reinforcing strip 6. Vertical reinforcing members 7 are secured to the members 3 and to the web-portions'2 of the substantially U-shaped members 1 and have secured thereto, plates 8, which are provided with circular grooves 9 having communicating therewith downwardly depending grooves 10. A substantially rectangular board 11 has secured thereto adjacent each end, reinforcing strips 12, on which are formed arms 13 that are provided with elongated slots 14:. Bolts 15 extend through the elongated slots 14 and the vertical reinforcing members 7 whereby the arms 13 are pivotally and slidably connected to the end members 1. Formed upon the free ends of the arms 13 are pins 16, which extend into the circular grooves 9 and adapted to travel in the downwardly depending grooves 10 when the device is converted into a table, and which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A rack 17 is secured to the substantially U-shaped members in any well known manner and has secured thereto by hinges 18, a cover 19, which will form a seat to the device when being applied as a chair or seat.
When it is desired to form a table of the aforedescribed device, the board 11 is swung upwardly and into a substantially horizon downwardly with the pins 16 traveling" witl-iin the downwardly depending grooves 10, allow-ingthe board 11 to rest flatly upon 10 the arm rests 2 of the end members 1, thus providing avery efficient table whereby the board 11 will be prevented from swinging out of the horizontalposition, owing to the pins 16 occupying the position within the -5 grooves 10. V
When it is desired to form a seat of the aforedescribed device, the board 11 is raised upwardly and swung to a substantially vertical position, the pins .16 passing out of .the 2,0 grooves into the circular grooves 9. The board ll then being supported in such a position that the same will rest flatly against the arm rests of the substantially ll-slmped members 1, forming an inclined back rest to the seat. Y
If desired, the bolts 15 may be substituted by set screws as shown in Fig. 7, whereby the adjustment of the arms 13 with relation to the members 1 maybe readily regulated by increasing and decreasing the tension of the set screws 2.0 upon thearms and within the elongated slots 14. The set screws 20 being threaded into the openings of the vertical reinforcing members 7. 53.6 7 It Will also be noted that a device has been provided wherein the board 11 may be swung upon either side of thesubstantially U-shap'ed members 1 to provide a seat, which will be accessible from either side thereof.
NVhi le I have shown and described the 40 preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and .seope ofthe invention as claimed. i
'Having thus; described my. invent-ion, I la m 1 a A combined seat and table comprising substantially .U-shap ed endsupporting mem- 5 bers having web portions disposed upper-- most to form arm rests, aseat secured to the ends of the arm portions of said substantially U-shapedcmembers, a seat connecting said members, plates carried by the end members and having circular gnooveslan-d downwardly depending grooves in communicationtwith the circular. grooves, arms slidably and pivotally connected to the end members, a board secured to the arms, and
lugs formed upon said arms and adapted to travel in the circular grooves and the downwardly depending grooves to lock the board in a substantially horizontal position to form atable. l In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
