PUMP-STRAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,847, dated December 13, 1898.
Application filed January 11, 1898. Serial No. 666 ,347. (No model.)
. the tube of the pump; and the object of the invention is to provide a strainer by means .of which practically all the water in the well of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the pump-tube, and 2 the strainer. This strainer consists of a hollow body the wall of which is solid from its base to the point CL, and from the point a to the point Z) the body is of open-work construction formed by the ribs 2, the upper ends of which are connected by a collar 3, which is adapted to be engaged with the lower end of the pump-tubein any suitable manner-as, for instance, by the set screw 4. Formed integral with the collar and projecting downwardly within the body portion of the strainer, below the openings therein, is what I will term a deflector, which is in the form of a pipe.
It is evident that when this strainer is attached to the lower end of the pump-tube and rests upon the bottom of the well the water will be drawn through the openings in the strainer downwardly under the lower edge of the deflector, and thence upwardly and through the deflector and into the pump-tube. This will prevent the water in the well below the point aof the strainer from being stirred or riled, thereby preventing the sand and other foreign substance at the bottom of the well being drawn into the pump-tube, and, owing to the fact that the tubular deflector projects nearly to the bottom of the strainer, the well may be drained to a point corresponding to the line denoted by the letter a.
If desired, the upper portion of the strainer may be covered with a fine wire-gauze or network 7, which will prevent any floating matter, such as twigs and the like, being drawn into the strainer.
I am aware of Patents No. 33,736, of November19, 1861, No. 47,011, of March 28, 1865, and No. 55,822, of June 26, 1866, and would have it distinctly understood that I do not seek to cover the construction shown in any of these patents; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A pump-strainer comprising a hollow imperforate body portion,the upper end of which is formed with an annular row of integral inwardly-projecting ribs terminating in an integral sleeve that has its lower end extending downward within the imperforate body portion, and its upper end extending upward above-the upper ends of the ribs, and a wiregauzesecured around the ribs, substantially as set forth.
