Description

No. fill-3,439. V Patented Nov. I, I898. J. BERKOWITZ.
CLOTHES LIFTER.
Application fll'ed July 29, 1898) (No Model.)
INVENZ'UHZ wrmzz 5555 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JANET BERKOWITZ, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CLOTH ESI-LIFTE'R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,439, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed July 29, 1898. Serial No. 687,159. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JANET BERKOWITZ, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Lifters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in devices for lifting clothes out of the vessel in which the clothes are soaked or boiled; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the lifter, more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clothes-lifter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional'view of the greater part of the same.
In the drawings, a indicates the handle portion, and b the tongue portion, having the curved point 0 of the arm d, in which is the longitudinal slot e. The arm 9 is pivotally secured and supported in said slot by the pin h. The handle t extends over the handle a, and the tongue portion 70 of the arm 9 has the upward-curved and pointed end Z below the tongue portion 19. The conical pin f is secured obliquely to the arm d to form a handhold.
When used, the tongue ends of the lifter are separated by moving the handles a and t' apart.
tongue 70 is inserted into and among the clothes in the vessel containing them, and
The curved and pointed end Z of the I the tongue end I) is now brought to bear on the clothes by moving the arms a and i toward each other, thereby firmly grasping the clothes. To lift the clothes with the handles a and 'i would require the exertion of a great deal of strength; but by the use of the pin 0 one hand may grasp the handles 2" and a,'
while the other hand by taking hold of the pin-handle f can raise the clothes with ease.
The transfer of the clothes from one vessel to the other is greatly facilitated by the use of my lift-er, the labor materially lightened, and the hands not required to touch the clothes ,or' the liquid. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a clothes-lifter, the combination witli the slotted arm (1 having the handle a and the pointed end a of the part b, the arm g having the handle 71 and the upward-curved and pointed end Z of the part 71:, and the pin h forming the pivotal connection, of the pin f secured to the arm 1 in front of the slot e and oblique to the plane of the arm d; where'- by a handhold is provided and the lifting of the clothes facilitated, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JANET BERKOWITZ.
