IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-LIFTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,029, dated May 20, 1873; application filed April 11, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. SMITH, of Ipswich, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Implement or Box-Lifter; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of it with its forked lever. Fig. 2 is a similar view of it with out the said lever. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lever.

The said article is to facilitate the handling and lifting of timber, stone, or boxes or bales of merchandise. It consists not only of a curved bar, a, provided at its lower end with a toothed foot or claw, b, and at its upper with a stirrup or open handle, 0, arranged as exhibited, but of a fork, (1, formed as shown, and applied to slide up or down on the bar a, all being essentially as represented.

The forked lever A, bent at a right angle at c, and notched, as shown at 61, when used with the box-lifter, passes through the handle, with the upper part of the bar a in the notch, all being as shown in Fig. 1. It serves to enable a person to support with both hands the lifter and whatever it may be applied to.

In using the lifter for moving and supporting a box, the toothed claw is to be inserted under the bottom of such box at one edge thereof, the fork being brought down against the top or side of the box and pressed upon such, so as to cause the points of the prongs to enter the box a little.

With two such lifters applied to the bottom and two opposite sides of a box, two persons,

can readily raise it and carry it from one place to another Without the necessity of touching it with their hands.

I claim as my invention- 1. The box-lifter, substantially as described, composed of the curved bar a, the claw b, the handle 0, and the movable fork d, constructed, arranged, and applied together essentially as shown and explained.

2. Combined or for use therewith, as set forth, the bent and notched lever A, as represented.
