Srn'rns Arent ORISON M. SMITH, OF DULUTI-LMINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. GILMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLAIVIPING DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING DOORS, &.O.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,340, dated September 27, 1898.
Application iled October 29,1894. Renewed December 4, 1896. Serial No. 619;.522. (No model.)
To 1J/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORIsoN M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Supporting Doors, dsc.; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device for supporting a door, window-sash, plank, and similar objects in an upright position, and more especially intended to support a door so as to readily enable an operator to plane or true the edges thereof, to assist in properly hanging the door,to attach or detach the hinges, die.
The primary object of my invention 'is to construct a simple, economical, reliable, and durable device which will materially assist a carpenter or operator in performing the functions necessary in hanging, planing, or attaching hinges to and detaching them from a door without other or additional assistance.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which will clamp and firmly se-` cure the object to be operated upon in an upright position, yet at the same time readily release the object when desired; and a still further object is to provide a hinged base, clamping-jaws, and adjusting devices of such a character as will readily perform the func- Y tions intended to be performed by said devices.
The above-mentioned objects and such others as will appear from the ensuing description and be pointed out in the claims are attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side `elevation of the device embodying my invention; Fig-2, a sectional v portions being suitably hinged or pivoted together through the medium ot' pins or rods a c and a connecting member or suitable link b, as clearly shown in the drawings.
B B illustrate sliding or adjustable frames secured to the base portions and capable of being readily adjusted thereon through the medium ofthe adjusting devices d d', adapted to the said frames, and the slotted portions e e of the base. The adjustable frames are provided with upright dovetailed portions it', to which are fitted blocks 7o 7c', of rubber or other suitable material, forming the clamping jaws or portions, between which the object to be operated upon or utilized is firmly held or securely clamped in an upright position, as showniin Fig. 2. The upper portion of each block is provided with a recess o, to which is adapted a nut o', fitted on the screw-threaded end of a bolt or thumb-screw for the purpose of securely holding the blocks lo 7o in position.
To the connecting member or link b I attach, by means of a pin or rod t3, a U-shaped lever d2 for the purpose of readily throwing the clamping-jaws apart when it is desired to remove the object from the said jaws, thereby causingthe jaws to assume aposition substantially as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.
When not in use, the lever rests upon the base portion. The inner ends of the base portions are slightly elevated and the jaws normally open and inclined in an outwardly direction in order to readily receive the door or other object held thereby. As soon, however, as the object to be operated is inserted between the jaws and caused to rest upon the jointed or inner end of the base portions and upon the connecting link or member the weight of the object willcause the inner ends of the jointed or hinged base and connectinglink to bedepressed, the jaws to assume a vertical position, and the lever to rise and remain slightly above the base,'so that when it is desired to throw the jaws Vapart and remove the object from between the same it is only necessary for the operator to depress the ends of the lever by hand or foot, thereby causing the inner ends of the base and the connecting-linktobe slightly elevated and thus force the jaws apart.
IOO
It will be seen that the frames B B are provided With handles or handholds m in order t0 permit the operator to easily shift the said frames to the right or left and at the same time operate the adjusting devices CZ d.
It will be understood that slight changes from the exact detailed construction of my device as hereinbefore referred to may-be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A clam ping device for supporting doors, &c., comprising two base portions, an adjustable and removable clamping-frame mounted upon each of the base portions, anda connecting-link pivotally connecting the base portions, for the purpose set forth.
2. A clamping device for supporting doors, dac., comprising slotted base portions, a conmeeting-link for pivotally uniting said base portions, slidable and removable frames supported upon said base portions, and adjusting devices connecting the base portions and said frames together, substantially as described.
8. A clamping device for supporting doors, &c., comprising slotted base portions, a connecting-link between the inner ends of said base portions forpivotally uniting the same, adjustable and removable frames provided with upright dovetailed portions adapted to receive the clamping-block, said frames being supported upon the base portions, and adjusting devices connecting said base portions and frames together, substantially as described.
4. A clamping device for supporting doors, dac., comprising base portions, a connectinglink for pivotally uniting the inner ends of said portions, a lever connected to the said connecting-link,adjustable frames supported upon said base, and adjusting devices connecting the base portions and said frames together, substantially as described.
5. A clamping device for supporting doors, duc., comprising slotted base portions, a connecting-link for pivotally uniting the inner ends of said portions, alever connected to said link, adjustable'frames provided With dovetailed portions adapted to receive a clamping-block, said frames being supported upon the base portions, adjusting devices connecting the base portions and frames together, and means for securing the clamping-blocks to the dovetailed portion of the said frames, substantially as described. l
In testimony Whereofl afliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ORISON M. SMITH.
