Description
.geiten fates strnt @fitta L. V. BAD-GER, OF C'HIGAG, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 61,037, dated January 8, 1867.
IMPROVED NUTMEG GRATER;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, L. V. BADGER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, hayc invented a new and Improved Nutmeg Grater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in thc art to make and use the saine, reference being had to thc accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specification.
The present invention relates to an implement for the grating of nutmegs, with which it can bc accomplish'ed with the utmost ease, readiness, and dispatch, and in a most convenient mann-er, the grater being both simple and cheap in construction, and when used, entirely obviates any waste of the nutmegs, which, in case they are'gra-ted by holding them between the fingers -of the hand upon the graterfis unavoidable, without the fingers are more or'less injured by coming in Contact with the grating surface. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved nutmeg grater is illustrated.
Figure l being a plan or top view of the same; and
Figure 2 a central longitudinal vertical section, taken in the plane of the line a: se, iig. 1.
A, in the drawings, represents my new and improved nutmeg grater, which consists of a sector-shaped case, B,.closed along its curved edge by a grating perforated plate, C, and its sides by plates, D, but open at its/top andrear edges, E and F, respectively. This case B is secured to a stand, G, at one end of its curved ge, as -plainlyshown in g. 2 of the drawings. H, a hollow cylinder, open at each end, and hung at one end by trunnion pins, a, to and between the side-plates D of the easing B, so as to freely swing therein, the other open end of this cylinder being near` to the inside falce of the curved plate C of the casing B, corresponding to which in direction it describes a curve as it is swung in its bearings of the casing, ailange, a, at each end of the curved plate C limiting its movement in either direction. I, a hollow plunger made of suitable size to iit within the hollow rocking cylinder H of the casing B, which plunger, at one end, is closed by a plate, J, having a series of pcrforations, b, roughened or ragged at their edges, upon the outside face of the said plate, and at its other end by a cap or-knob, K, that, by means of a slot, c, and pin, d, fastened in the plunger, so as to be attached thereto or removed therefrom at pleasure. K
I-Iaving thus described the construction of my improved grater for nutmcgs, I will now proceed to explain the manner in which it is used. i
Ihenutmeg which is to be grated is-irst dropped in the hollow cylinder H, when, placing the plunger Iin such cylinder and bringing its perforated'end to bear against the nutmeg, and thus it, in its turn, against the grating plate C, the cylinder II is then swung forward and backward in its casing' B, which, carrying the nutmeg over the said grating plate, causes it to be grated as desired; the nutmeg, as fast as it is thus gratedaway, being held against the grating plate by bearing down`upon th plunger I with suiicient'pressurc therefor. By roughening the end of the plunger I, the rolling of the nutmeg in the cylinder II, as it moves over the grating surface; is prevented, and the nutmeg is held perfectly iirm and rigid to the grating surface.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sector-shaped case D, having hollow cylinder H hung in and betweenits sides-plates D, in combination with the plunger I of said cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
L. V. BADGER.
Witnesses O. F. BnUss, H; H. BADGER.
