SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,592, dated August 23, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANTHONY B. SHULTZ, of North Baltimore, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or 001- lapsible Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding or collapsible tables; and it consists of the novel arrangement of simple parts which will be hereinafter particularly set forth and described.

The object of the invention is to produce a table of the character above mentioned which Will be especially adapted to the use of excursionists or outing parties and for use in places where a table is temporarily desired,

and one which can be readily folded and Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved table in position for use. of a series of leaves 2, substantially triangu lar in form and having their edges connected with each other by hinges 3 in such a manner that said leaves will be permitted to be folded one upon the other to be packed or ex tended to form a table.

The numeral 4 indicates a box or cover, preferably constructed in triangular form of some suitable light material and provided with a flanged opening 5 at its bottom, which is adapted to be closed when desired by two laterally-extensible slides 6, provided with pins 7, which are adapted to enter the elongated slots 8 made in the lower portion of the angular plates 9, which are attached to the lower edges of the short sides of the box. These slides are adapted to be extended laterally to form additional support forthe table and be closed to cover the opening 5 in the cover 4.

The numeral 10 indicates a short standard which may be made with any convenient number of pieces bored centrally for the passage of the externally-screw threaded rod 11, provided at its lower end with a head 12. This screw-threaded rod passes through a perforation 13 made in the top of the section 14 and through the standard 10, where immediately above the same it is provided with a washer 15, which is centrally perforated and adapted to be moved up and down on said rod.

The table-leaves are slightly cut away at their narrow ends, as indicated at 16, in such a manner that when the leaves are extended into position for use there will be a small perforation formed in the center of the table, through whichpasses the upper end of the screw-threaded rod 11, which is of such length as to extend a short distance above the upper surface of the table to permit a screw-threaded washer 17 to be screwed thereon. The secs tion 14 is formed with inclined sides and is provided at the lower portion of two of its sides with hooks 18, which are adapted to engage suitable eyes provided on the upper narnow portion of the cover when said section is fitted thereon.

The lower washer 15 is preferably made much larger than the washer 17 to prevent the table from tilting. Any suitable means for conveniently carrying the table may be provided, such as a handhold, as indicated by the numeral 19.

The operation of my table is as follows: Assuming the table to be packed or folded and it is desired to put the same in position for use, the slides 6 are opened, the leaves taken from the box and extended or unfolded, the section 14 is removed or detached from the top of the cover, and the rod 11 is passed upward through the opening 13 and through the standard 10 and washer 15,When the tableleaves are seated upon the said washer 15 and washer 17 and screwed down upon said rod until it pins upon the upper "surface of the table, when the screw-head-12 is turned until the table, standard, and section 13 are secured firmly together, when the cover is put into position on its end and the section 13 secured to the top thereof.

It will be observed that the slides 6 perform the double function of a cover for the opening 5 and a broadened base for the table When the same is in position for use,

The section 14 will be of such size as to permit the washer and standard to be stored therein when desired, or the cover may be of such size as to permit these parts, together with the leaves, to be packed in said cover.

Having thus fullv described my invention,

what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A folding table comprising a hollow standard adapted to receive the folded leaves of the table, a top section removably connected with the standard, a table formed of a series of substantially triangular leaves hinged at their edges, and means for supporting the table in a horizontal position upon the top section, substantially as described.

2. A folding table comprising a hollow standard adapted to receive the folded leaves of the table and a portion of its supporting means, a top section removably secured to the hollow standard, a short standard having a screw-threaded rod passing therethrough and provided with plates or washers at or near its upper end, means for drawing the washers together, and a table formed of a series of leaves substantially triangular in form and hinged together at their edges, substantially as described.

3. A folding table comprising a hollow standard adapted to receive the folded leaves of the table and a portion of the supporting means, a top section removably secured to the standard, a short standard mounted on the top section, a screw-threaded rod passing through the short standard and provided at its upper portion with Washers or plates 15 and 17,a head on said rod adapted to be turned to draw the plates together, and secure the table between them, substantially as described.

4. A folding table comprising a hollow standard substantially triangular in form and adapted to receive the folding leaves of the table and a portion of the supporting means, provided at its bottom with extensible slides, a top section, folding table proper, and means substantially as described for s'upportin g and maintaining the table in horizontal position.
