UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN NAZEL, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. BORTON AND J. HARVEY BORTON, OE SAME PLACE.
MAG N ETIC TACK-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,555, dated August 2, 1898.
Application filed December 29, 1897. Serial No. 664,197.v (No model.) Y
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN NAZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ce1'- tain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Tack-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
Objects of the present invention are, first, to provide a compact, durable,`and efficient magnetic tack-driver in which the tacks are positioned and driven, and, second, to provide a durable and comparatively inexpensive arrangement or combination of parts constituting such a device.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, and in which- Figure l is an elevational View illustrating a driver embodying features of my invention and showinga tack in improper position; and Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same, showing the tack straightened and guided.
In the drawings, A is a hollow handle, through and beyond one end of which the magnetic driver 1 projects. 2 is a non-magnetic tubular sleeve movably fitted to the driver and adapted to telescope or work within the hollow interior of the handle. One end of the handle A is closed. However, as shown, it is provided with a comparatively small internally-threaded opening, with which the threaded end of the driver engages, so that the driver may be readily detached. The opposite end of the handle A is open. Into the open end of the handle is inserted a collar 8. The sleeve 2 is provided with a shoulder 9, which by contactwith the collarS serves to prevent the sleeve from becoming accidentally detached from the handle. The described tool is adapted for driving tacks close up to any object, as into a floor close up to a washboard, without danger of striking or marring the board or'object. In use the top of the sleeve works within the hollowT of the handle and is guided therein by the shank of the driver 1, so that the ltool is not only eificient, but also compact and durable.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the Inature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination a hollow handle open at one end, a magnetic driver projecting from the open end of the handle and extending tlirou gh the hollow interior thereof, and a nonmagnetic tubular sleeve movably tted to the driver and afforded ran geof movement within the hollow portion of the handle, substantially as described. j
2. In combination a hollow handle open at one end, a magnetic driver projecting from the open end of the handle and supported by the other end thereof, a non-magnetic tubular sleeve movably fitted to the driver and provided with a shoulder, and a collar surrounding the sleeve and applied to the open endof the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN NAZEL.
