TOOL-COUPLING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. ETTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cisne, in the county of Wayne and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im provements in Tool-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tool couplings, and has for an object to provide a coupling of this character adapted for use in connecting a drill bit to the drill rod and to provide simple and novel means for effectively preventing displacement of said parts while the tool is in operation and to also afford means whereby the tool can be conveniently removed from the drill rod at the will of the operator.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool coupling. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the drill rod and the bit shank showing the coupling sleeve in section. Fig. 41 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 4t4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the form illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a shank 1 of a drill provided at its lower end with an enlargement 2 provided with an interiorly threaded portion 3 and with a vertical groove 1. A drill bit or similar tool is illustrated at 5 and the shank 6 thereof is provided at its upper end with an enlargement 7 having formed therein a vertical groove 8 adapted to aline with the groove 4 in the enlargement 2. A sliding sleeve 9 is engaged with the shank 1 of the drill rod and is adapted when in its operative position to span the joint between the shank 1 of said drill rod and the shank 6 of the bit or tool 5. The shank 6 carries a stop screw 10 adapted to engage the sleeve 9 to prevent movement thereof in a downward direction beyond a predetermined point. The sleeve 9 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 11, 1909.
Serial No. 501,556.
with a vertical groove 11 which when the sleeve is revolved can be brought into alinement with the grooves 4 and 8 previously described. To prevent longitudinal movement of the shank 1 and the shank 6 after they have been connected to each other I proi ide the said shank 6 with a threaded stem 12 adapted to be engaged in the threaded passage 8 formed in the shank 1.
In operation of the coupling when it is desired to connect the shank 1 to the shank 6 I place them in alinement with each other and engage the stem 12 in the passage 3 in such manner that when the said shank has been properly connected the grooves 4: and 8 will be in proper alinement with each other. After this operation the sleeve 9 is moved downwardly upon the shank 1 until it engages the stop 10, after which the said sleeve can be revolved to bring its vertical groove 11 into alinement with the grooves 4: and 8. A locking key is illustrated at 13 and is preferably of rectangular form in cross section and arranged to fit in the grooves 4, 8 and 11 so as to hold the shanks 1 and 6 against rotation.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the shank 1 is provided with an exteriorly threaded enlargement 14, and the said enlargement has formed therein a threaded passage 15 which receives a correspondingly threaded stem 16 upon the exteriorly threaded enlargement 17 carried by the shank 18 of the bit or tool. In this form of my invention the sleeve 19 is interiorly threaded as illustrated at 20 and is adapted to be engaged with the threads upon the enlargements of the shanks 1 and 18. The said eXteriorly threaded enlargements are provided with alining grooves 21 similar to the grooves 4 and 8 in the preferred form of my invention, and these grooves are adapted to aline with the groove 22 formed in the sleeve 19 so as to effectively receive the locking key 23 identical with the key 13.
I claim 1. A coupling of the class described comprising two alining shanks, means for holding the shanks against longitudinal movement relative to each other, a sleeve adapted to span the joint between the said shanks, and a locking key engaged with the shanks and with the sleeve for holding the shanks against rotary movement.
2. A device of the class described comprising two alining shanks provided with Patented Mar. 22, 1910.
headed end portions, said headed portions having grooves adapted to aline With each other, a sleeve engaged With said headed portions for spanning the joints between the shanks, means for holding the shanks against movement away from each other, said sleeve having a groove formed therein adapted to aline with the grooves formed in the said headed portions of the shanks,
and a removable locking key seatedin the 10 groove formed in the sleeve and in the grooves formed in the said headed portions. In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
