Be it known that I, ANNA E. BOWERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at WVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Poles,of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in curtain-poles, and has for itsobject to provide novel and effective means for holding the curtain to the pole without the aid of the ordinary rings and pins. 7

The principal features of my invention reside in the pole proper, which has one-quarter portion thereof cut away, and the two faces thereby provided have grooves arranged throughout their entire length which are adapted to have the curtain compressed and held therein by means of ribs that are formed on a one-quarter-round strip that engages in the cut-away portion of the pole and makes the same complete. This quarter-round section is held in its position bymeans of the ornamental knobs on the ends of the pole, which have an extending sleeve formed integral therewith, said sleeve being provided with an opening that permits the quarterround section being placed in position. These sleeves are prevented from turning orbecoming accidentally loosened, so as to permit the quarter-round section becoming disengaged, by means of spring-plates arranged in the pole and provided with a segmental-shaped flange that engages in the opening in the sleeve when the latter is turned in position for holding the quarter-round strip.

With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,

Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 indicates the pole proper, which is provided on one face with a cut-away portion 2, comprising one quarter of the pole and extending throughout the length thereof. ;On the two inner faces of the pole, which. are

thus formed by cutting one-quarter of the same away, are provided grooves or flutes 3, which also extend the full length of the pole and are adapted to receive ribs 4, which are formed on the right angled face 5 of the quarter-round strip 6,this strip being adapted to fit neatly in the cutaway portion of the pole and cause the same to present an outward appearance of a solid pole. This quarter-round strip is held in position by means of the end sleeves 7, which are or may be provided with ornamental knobs 8 and have a cut-away portion 9, which is of sufficient size and depth to admit the insertion of the quarter-round strip 6 into its position in the pole proper. For the purpose of retaining these sleeves in their position and preventing the same turning in a manner to bring the cut-away portion opposite the quarter-round strip and thereby allow the latter to release its grip upon the curtain I provide near each end of the pole and upon its rear face a recess 10, inwhich is secured a spring-plate 11, which has its free end turned upwardly and formed in a segmentshaped flange 12, which extends normally above the surface of the pole.

"Where extra long poles are used and it is desired to fasten the same at the center of the quarter-round strips, so as to relieve the strain at the ends of the poles, a hook 14 may be secured to the quarter-round strip for en-* gagement with the eye 15, secured in the pole proper. The curtain is placed in the cutaway portion of the pole and is compressed into the grooves?) by means of the ribs 4., that are formed on the right-angled face of the quarter-round strip 6, the sleeves 7 having been previously turned so as to bring the cut-away portion 9 on the same opposite the cut-away portion of the pole, and thereby allow the quarter-round strip to be readily placed in position. \Vhen the cut-away portion of the pole and of the sleeves register in this manner, the flanged end of the springplate 11 will be compressed by the sleeve 7 engaging the same, and when the sleeve 7 is turned so as to retain the quarter-round strip in its position the flange 12 will engage in the cut-away'portion of the sleeve and prevent the same turning in either direction until sufficient force is exerted against the sleeve, so as to cause the same to depress the said flange 12 within its recess to bring the opening in the sleeves again into position for the removal of the quarter-round strip.

While the foregoing seems to embody the preferred principle of my invention, yet I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown herein, as various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A curtain-pole, which is provided with a cut-away portion comprising one-quarter of the pole extending throughout the length thereof, and the two right-angled faces,which are thus formed in the pole being provided with grooves also extending throughout the length of the pole, a quarter round strip which is provided on its right-angled faces with ribs adapted to match with the grooves in the pole, and securing-sleeves adapted to engage the ends of the pole, and provided with cut-away portions whereby the quarterround strip may be removed or placed in its position on the pole, substantially as shown and described.

'2. In combination, a curtain-pole which is provided throughout its length with a cutaway portion, a strip adapted to fit within the-said cut-away portion, sleeves engaging the ends of the pole, and provided with cutaway portions which permit the insertion of the strip in the cut-away portion, of the pole, and spring-plates secured to the rear face of the pole and adapted to engage the aforesaid sleeves and prevent the same becoming accidentally turned, substantially as shown and described.
