To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known thatI, JOHN L. WIRT,of Wash; ington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags or Boxes; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in "which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my toolbag shown as closed or folded and attached to a bicycle-frame; Fig. 2, a like view showing the bag opened; Fig. 3, a vertical crosssection on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section on the line y y of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a one-piece blank from which-my bag is made.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved bag or box, and to this end said invention consists in the bag orbox having the features of construction substantially as hereinafter specified.

The purpose Ihave had more especially in View is to provide a tool-bag for attachment to bicycles which while of simple and strong construction will be much superior to those of which I have knowledge in affording access to the tools, &c.; but while designing my bag for bicyclists use I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to such or any particular use, as the construction of the bag admits of its employment for a variety of uses.

In constructing my bag any material suitable for the purpose may beemployed; but I preferably use leather, and in the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings I cut a blank from a sheet of stiff leather which has the shape shown in Fig. 5. The main part of said blank has the form of a parallelogram, and it is scored or cut partially through on four. parallel straight lines A, B, O, and D to enable it to be folded to form thefront wall E, the back wall F, the bottom wall G, and the top wallH of the closed bag and a flap I to turn down over the front wall. At each end of the part that forms the back wall F there is a prolongation K, that is scored or partiallycut at L in aline at right angles to the scores A, B, C, and D to form Serial No. 638,251. a hinge connection with the main part of the blank, and is also scored at IVI parallel with the score L to form the end wall N of the bag. At the top. and bottom of the wall N there are respectively two triangular pieces ,0, and O, which by reason of a cut or score P for each that extends between the cuts Land M may be bent over to a plane at right angles to the plane of the end wall N, and the extremity Q of the prolongation K being likewise bent on the cut M its top and bottom edges can respectively be fastened, as by stitching, to the adjacent edges of the pieces 0 and 0, thus providing at the ends of the bag (in the pieces 0 and O and Q) portions adapted to overlap and engage the top and bottom walls and the front wall and flap of the folded bag, and thus confine said walls and flap in 'place in the form of a box-like structure. A buckle R,-attached to one of said ends,and a strap S,attached to the other, afford means for retaining them in position to keep the bag in a closed position.

On what are the interior surfaces of the walls of the closed bag loops or pockets T and T, formed of leather or other suitable material, are secured for the attachment or reception of the various appliances which it is desired shall be carried by the bicyclist. Of course the construction and design of these loops or pockets will vary according to the articles to be carried, and, indeed, they will be omitted altogether in bags or boxes in which it is not required that the inclosed articles shall be attached to the bag or box. For attaching the bag to a bicycle-frame straps and buckles U and U are provided on the top wall of the bag, near each end thereof, which are adapted to be passed over the top horizontal bar of the frame, and I also utilize the strap S as a part of the attaching means by passing it around the front bar or steering-head of the frame. The strap S is made to snugly encircle said bar to prevent lateral swing of the bag by placing a closely-fitting metal band or loop V upon the doubled portions of the strap in rear of the frame-bar. Said band or loop can be slid along the strap or the strap drawn through it to tighten or loosen the strap upon the frame-bar, the loosening being desirable when the bag is opened,

so as to permit the bag to be drawn away from the front frame-bar for the more convenient manipulation of the bag.

The straps may be attached to the bag in any desired way; but a convenient mode of attachment is that shown, where a cut or slot is made in the bag for each strap, through which the end of the strap is passed and riveted to the inner side of the bag.

In constructing my bag or box of sheet metal or other material which will not admit of the employment of scores or cuts to form the hinges or folding points the various walls will be separately formed and pivotally connectedtogetherbysuitablehinges. \Vhcn it is desired to use metal in the construction, such can be covered by leather or other material it exposure of the metal be objectionable.

\Vhen the bag is to be opened from the closed position, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4-, the strap S is disengaged from its buckle, freeing the two end pieces and permitting the same to be turned on their hinged connections with the back wall to remove their portions 0 O and Q from engagement with the front and top and bottom of the bag. Said parts can now be opened out or unfolded by being turned on the scores or hinges A, B, O, and D to the position shown in Fig. 2. Closing of the bag is of course effected by a reversal of these operations.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A bag or box having walls to close all sides, and which are hinged or flexibly connccted together, two of which, forming opposite ends of the box, being hinged on lines that intersect the lines on which the other walls are hinged, and having each portions that are rigidly held in fixed relation thereto, that overlap the ends of all of the other Walls, except the one to which it is hinged, when the box is in a closed position, to hold or restrain the same from opening on their flexible connections, substantially as and For the purpose specified.

2. A bag or box having all of its walls connected in one piece, the walls that form the four sides of the bag or box being flexibly connected on parallel lines, and the two walls that form the ends of the same being flexibly connected on lines at right angles to the others, and having each rigid portions that overlap three of the box or bag sides, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. A bag or box having walls that are flexibly connected on parallel lines, and walls that are flexibly connected on lines at right angles to the connections of the others, and swing in opposite directions to each other, and having portions to overlap other walls to hold the same in a closed position, said two sets of walls, forming all of the sides of the box and a strap connecting said holding-walls to secure them in holding position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. A bag or box formed of a single piece of material having the shape of a parallelogram with prolongations on opposite sides, the parallelogram being scored on parallel lines, and the prolongations being each scored 011 lines at right angles to, and lines parallel with said other scores, the parts of each prolongation being folded on certain of said scores to bring their free edges together, said edges being fastened together to hold the parts in fixed relation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
