Beit known that I, JOHN W. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherry Hill, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and.

useful Improvements in Detachable Shirt- Bosoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,fsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and yuse the same.

My invention relates to improvements in shirt-bosoms; audits primary object is 'to'proi vide a novel false or detachable bosom having two fronts, either one of which is adapted to be exposed at will,

A further object is to provide a bosom of this character having a body portion in semblance of aclosed bosom-front and two side flaps adapted to be folded over upon the back of said body portion to expose lthe closed bosomfront or over upon the front thereof to form the semblance of an open bosom-front.

The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description.

With the accomplishment of these ends in view my invention consists in a shirt-bosom embodying the novel construction of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating.

the invention, Figure l is a front view of a shirt-bosom embodying my invention, showing the side flaps folded over upon the inner or closed bosom-front. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 is also a front view, but shows the side aps folded back to expose the closed bosom-front. Fig. 4 is a back view showing the side flaps outspread; Fig. 5, a cross-section of the shirt-bosom on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig; 6 is an enlarged detail viewof the neckbandand` cape.

Referring nowV more part'cularly to the drawings, l represents the maln body portion of the bosom, formed of two or more plies of fabric united by the continuous line of stitching a and having the :neck-opening 2. In the present instance this body portion is shown formed by two plies, a back ply 3 and a front ply 4. This front ply 4 has the semblance of a closed bosom-front and is provided with a central plait 5, having stud-holes 6. At the line'of stitching b. Each folding iiap is cut` away at its upper end to form a neck-opening, and the iiap 8 is provided at its lower end with a tongue 9, having a transverse -opening 9 and a buttonhole 92. These two flaps are adapted to befolded over upon the closed bosom-front 4 to conceal the same and form the semblance of an open-front shirtbosom and to be folded back upon the back ply 3 to expose the said front4. One flap is made a little wider than the other in order that their edges will overlap when folded, and said flaps are provided with coinciding stud-holes 10 for the passage of a stud or studs to hold them folded. The vfront plies of the iaps may be plaited, if desired, to resemble a plaited shirt-bosom proper,

When the iaps 8 8 are folded over upon the bosom 4, as shown in Fig. l, the tongue 7 is passed through the opening 9 of the tongue 9 to the front and buttoned to the drawers; but when the iiaps are folded back, as shown in Fig. 2, the tongue 7 is passed through said opening to the rear and the tongue 9 is buttoned to the drawers. By this means the lower ends of the flaps are prevented from spreading open, the lower end of the bosom is held in place, and at the same time the drawers are supported. Although the folding aps are shown in the present instance as being formed by extending the material of the main body portion l, it Will 'be understood that they may be made independent of said f formedat its outer end with a buttonhole for engagement with the button which unites the IOO neckband-sections of the shirt at the placketopening. The said elastic sections are adapted to yield or give to adapt the neckbandpieces to shirt-bands of different sizes. Capebands 13, adapted to be buttoned together, may be used, if desired, to aid the neckband in supporting the bosom.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of use of my improved false or detachable shirt-bosoln will be clearly understood. This false bosom may be used in connection with either stiff or soft bosomed shirts without inconvenience or annoyance and is capable of being readily and conveniently put on and taken oit. It provides a simple and effective means whereby two different patterns or styles of shirt-fronts may be combined in a single shirt-bosom and a clean bosom-front exposed after the bosomfront in use has become soiled.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

A false or detachable shirt-bosom, consisting of a body portion in the form of a bosomfront and provided at its lower end with a tongue having a buttonhole, and side Iiaps adapted to be folded over upon the face of the body portion, one of said iiaps being provided at its lower end with a tongue having a buttonhole and an opening through which the tongue on the said body portion is adapted to be passed, substantially as described.
