To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LINUS TERRY FURNAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Im proved Dress-Form, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to dress forms, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,107,055, granted to me on August 11, 191%.

An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved dress form provided with shirred ruffles for rectifying defects in he human figure, and arrangedto obviate slipping of the draw string or cord through the loop of the loop string, thus preventing the ruffle from drawing up hard when shirring the same after washing and allowing ready flattening out of the rui'lie preparatory to washing.

A further object of the invention is to provide a dress form for each side of the garment and made in a front and rear section, of which the rear section is provided with an extension at the rear to reach under the arm portion of the garment for shaping and filling out purposes.

In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of shirring and limiting means on a fiounce to permit of shirring the same, the said means comprising interengaging loop members for limiting the shirring to form a ruflie of the length of one of the loops, anda stop on the flounce in the path of the loop members to limit the shirring movement thereof. Use is also made of dress forms at the front portions of the garment, each form consisting of shirred front and back sections, the back section having a shirred rearward extension reaching under the corresponding armhole of the garment.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere as applied and provided with the improved dress form, the brassiere being in closed position; Fig. 2 is a. similar view of the same with the brassiere opened; Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross section of the dress form on the line 33 of Fig. 4:; Fig. f is a face view of the same with the parts broken out Specification of Letters Patent.

and one end of a flap turned back; Fig. 5 is a similar view of a portion of a flounce provided with a modified form of the stop for the draw string and the loop string; Fig. 6 is a face view of one front portion of, the brassiere with the flounces in position thereon; and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same with the flounces untied one relative to the other and one of the flounces turned up.

In re-shirring ruilles after the garment is washed the user often has considerable difficulty in correctly shirring the ruffle to provide the desired fullness, the rufiie being either shirred too much or not enough. In shirring the ruifle with the means shown and described in my Letters Patent above referred to, the d aw string is made to slip through the loop thus causing the ruiiie to draw up hard when shirring and to prevent ready flattening thereof when unshirring. In order to overcome this defect the following arrangement is made: The body A of the brassiere, corset cover, or other garment, is shown open at the front and each of the front portions A is provided at the under face with a ruflie made in front and rear sections B and B. The upper edges of the sections B and B are provided with hems C and C engaging a string D secured at its ends to the corresponding front A near the upper end thereof, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The front section B is provided at its front edge with a tying string E adapted to be tied to a similar string E attached to the front A of the garment. The back section B is provided with an extension B extending along the armhole of the garment approximately at the bottom thereof, and the rear edge of the extension B is provided with a tying string E adapted to be tied to a corresponding string E on the garment at the bottom of the armhole. By providing the rear section B with this armhole extension it is evident that a desired shape and fullness can be given to the garment at this particular point. The same construction also applies to back-opening garments.

The foundation F of each section B, B is provided with a number of flaps G secured at their upper ends to the foundation piece F. A hem H is formed by each flap G in conjunction with the foundation F, and Within each hem H are arranged a loop string I and a draw string J. The loop string I is doubled up to form a loop and its ends are secured by stitches I or other means to the corresponding end H of the hem H. The doubled-up loop string I is of a length corresponding approximately to the length of the flounce after being shirred. The draw string J is also doubled up and passes through the loop of the loop string I, the ends of the draw string J extending through the other open end H of the hem H and their terminals are tied or otherwise fastened together as indicated at J. A stop K is arranged at the end H of the hem H to limit the shirring movement of the loop string I and the draw string J by causing the loop of the loop string I to abut against the stop K at the time the draw string J is drawn outward and the flap G is shirred to form the flounce. The stop K is preferably in the form of a piece of tape extending across the end of the hem H and being secured at its ends to the foundation F. The tape provides two separate passages for the ends of the draw string J and consequently the draw string cannot entirely be pulled out of the hem H.

Instead of using a tape for providing the separate passages for the ends of the draw string J, a stop K may be made by a tack or row of stitches extending longitudinally approximately at the middle of the hem and the foundation F, as shown in Fig. 5.

When the flounce is flattened out and it is desired to shirr the fiounce, it is only necesloop string I. From the foregoing it will be seen that the length of the shirred ruflie corresponds to the length of the loop string I, which is the required length to shirr the ruffle to the proper fullness. The draw strings J of the adjacent flounce sections B and B are tied into bows so as to connect the adjacent edges of the sections with each other and at the same time hold the flounces in shirred position.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the user of the garment after washing the same can quickly and correctly shirr each rufile to obtain the desired fullness and without danger of s'hirring the rufiies too much or not sufliciently and without danger of the shirring strings slipping through the open ends of the helns.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A dress provided with a fiounce having a hem, a loop string within the said hem and doubled up to form a loop, the ends of the loop string being secured to one end of the flounce, and a draw string extending within the said hem and doubled up, the draw string passing through the loop of the loop string and having its ends extending through the other end of the hem, the draw string ends passing through separate passages at the last-mentioned end of the hem.

2. A dress form provided with a flounee having a hem, a loop string within the said hem and doubled up to form a loop, the ends of the loop string being secured to one end of the flounce, a draw string extending within the said hem and doubled up, the draw string passing through the loop of the loop string and having its ends extending through the other end of the hem, and a tape attached at its ends to the flounees and extending across the last mentioned end of the hem to form separate passages for the ends of the draw string.
