T. S. WELLS. OPERA CHAIR.
No. 599,430. Patented Feb. '22, 1898.
WITNESSES INVENTOR 220m 5. %ZZ8. W
THE "cams PEYERS co. PHDTOUTHII, WASHINGTON a, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. WELLS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
OPERA-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,430, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed February 20, 1897. Serial No. 624,315. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Opera-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a chair, and is designed more especially as an opera-chair, the object being to provide a chair of this description having certain conveniences and receptacles to contain the hat and portions of clothing.
The invention consists in the features of con struction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an opera-chair constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with parts broken away for convenience of illustration.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the frame of the chair, which consists of two side pieces suitably joined together in the manner shown. The seat 2 is hinged to the side pieces 1 in the manner shown, while below the said seat the body of the chairis provided with a receptacle 3, open at its upper end, but closed when the seat 2 is in a horizontal position. The back 4 of the chair is hinged to the side piece at one side thereof and is provided with a latch 5 to engage a pivoted spring-actuated catch 6 on the side of the chair. The said catch 6 is provided with a finger-button 7, by means of which it may be retracted to allow the hinged section 4 of the back to be opened. The back of the chair in the rear of the section 4 is provided with a receptacle 8, and within this receptacle is a hook 9 and a spring 10, that bears against the rear wall of the receptacle 8 and against the back 4 of said chair and which serves to open the section 4 when it is unlatched. The back of the chair is provided with the racks 11 to hold a walking-stick or umbrella, and near the upper end of the back is a shelf 12. The racks 11 and shelf 12 are hinged to the back of the chair by any convenient hinge that will look when said parts are extended.
It will be seen that an opera-chair constructed in this manner contains the receptacle 8 for overcoats or wraps, while the hat may be placed within the receptacle 3, and, furthermore, the shelf 12 provides a convenient place upon which to place an opera-glass or program, while the racks 11 may be used for various other purposes.
It is understood, of course, that various changes in the structure and mechanical arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A chair comprising a frame consisting of two side pieces, a seat hinged between said side pieces, a receptacle 3 in the body of the chair below said seat, said receptacle having an open upper end which is closed by said seat when the latter is in a horizontal position and open when seat is raised, a receptacle in the back of said chair, the back piece 4 of the chair hinged at one side and having a latch 5 at its other side and serving to close the receptacle in the back of the chair, apivoted spring-actuated catch 6 at one side of the chair to engage said latch and provided with a finger-button 7 extending through the front of the chair by means of which it can be operated, and a spring for opening said back.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
