G.PAG.
(No Model.)
BUCKLE.
Patented Feb. 15,1898.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT PAG, OF MERRICK, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,956, dated February 15, 1898.
Application flied nach s, 1897.
To all Vwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT PAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrick, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, khave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has vrelation to vharnessbuckles; and it consists of a buckle having a` novel clamp-lever pivotally mountedon the frame thereof and provided with a stud for entering an opening in an attached strap.
It further consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a modied form of the invention, and Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the different gures.
A designates a buckle formed of a frame having a base B and side pieces or ears C. Pivoted or hinged in one end of the said side pieces is a lever or clamp D, having on its under side a stud E, adapted to enter an opening in an attached strap. The under side of the lever portion or arm of said clamp is beveled, so that it will readily fall below the top of the side walls or ears C. Mounted in the other end of the side pieces C is a tongue F, having on its under side, near its axial portion, a stud G, adapted to enter an opening in an attached strap on that end of the buckle. The end of the frame opposite to the axial portion of the tongue F has upwardly-projecting portions forming a loop H, and the free end of said tongue F is provided with a cross-bar J, secured at its ends in the depending side pieces K of said clamp, whereby the Serial No. 625,871. (No model.)
end of the strap which is placed in the buckle at said axial portion of the tongue F may be passed through a loop Ii,formed in said tongue above said cross-bar J, and then through the loop H, thus serving to close the cross-bar J of said tongue F on the clamp D, the side walls C of the frame having recesses M to permit of the same. The side walls K of the tongue Fare formed so as to close down and over the side walls C of the frame, so as not to interfere or come in contact with the ends of a strap in thatportion of the buckle.
In the modification shown in Figs. ,3 and 4 the frame A has the loops B and C 'at its opposite ends, the loop C being raised above the level ofthe base of lsaid frame. A clamp D is pivoted to the side walls or ears E of said frame and is provided with a depending stud F near its axial portion, the base of the frame A having a projecting stud G near the loop C. Pivoted to the ears E of the frame is a tongue H', having a recessed end, so as to avoid the stud F', said tongue bearing against and clamping the strap which is passed through said loop C into said buckle. The free end of the clamp or lever D extends beyond the end of said tongue, so as to bear directly on the strap.
f From the foregoing description of the parts the manner of securing the straps thereto is apparent. Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is l 1. A harness-buckle comprising a frame,
one end of which is provided with ears and the other end is provided with a loop, a lever pivotally secured to the ears and provided with means for securing a strap thereto, and a hinged retaining device upon the frame intermediate the ears and the loop, substantially as set forth.
8. A harness-buckle comprising a frame,
IOO
one end of which is provided with ears and the opposite end is provided With a loop and the intermediate portion is provided with a pin, a lever pivotally secured to the ears and provided with means for engaging With the strap, and a tongue hinged below the lever the free end of which is adapted to extend beyond the pin in the frame and engage with a strap thereon, substantially as set forth.
4. A buckle consisting of a frame having loops at its ends, and ears on its sides, a tongue pivoted in said ears, a lever pivoted in presence of two witnesses.
