IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PARSONS, of Palmyra, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.

My invention consists of a cast buckle with a cross-bearing and tongue of peculiar construction, whereby greater strength is produced, and the strap is held more securely in place and more easily adjusted.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement applied to a harness; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the buckle removed from place; Fig. 8, a longitudinal section of the buckle and strap 5 Fig. 4, a plan of the center-bearing of the buckle.

A A are the sides of the buckle, B B, the ends, and O is the center-bearing or crosspiece. The latter is of peculiar construction, having a central tongue, a, and side pieces b b, of notched form, which leaves angular spaces c c between them, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4. The back of the bearing is made rounded, so as to prevent wear to the leather. Froin this point the sides b b incline downward to a thin edge, while the tongue inclines upward, and is surmounted by a point, d, which stands vertically, and is of a length just equal to one thickness of leather. A hole formed in one end of the strap its over this point, as shown in Fig. 3, and the strap is carried down and passed through the loop or other device which is to be held, and is then doubled and carried back beneath the ends B B of the buckle, and connected beyond with the harness or other supporting part. In passing through over the central bearing O the strap is bent so that the buckle will hold its position at any point by the tension on the strap. The strap can therefore bel taken up or let out by simply sliding the buckle.

The bearing C by being made of the form described insures lightness and strength, and it also enables the buckle to be adjusted more easily, by reason of the open spaces c, and the long bevel and thin edges of the sides b b, which stand toward the long or single end ot the strap, and allow a depression of the upper inclosed bend of the strap in making the adjustment, the strap in that case only sliding over the rounded base of the bearing. Another advantage results froin the vertical point d upon the end of the angular tongue a, which serves as a stop to the slipping of the lower and short end of the strap as the other slides over it. If the tongue were simply angular, the short end of the strap would slip off by the friction of the long end.

Having thus described my invention, I do l not claim a loop in which a strap is bent double,

and passes under end cross-bars and over a central fulcruln, as I am aware the same is not new; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A buckle in which the cross-bar O is constructed with the V- shaped recesses c c and tongue a, with its vertical point d, combined as herein described, for the purpose specified.
