SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,727, dated January 25, 1898.

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MALONEY,
of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Apparatus for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that part of the steam-boiler plant that concerns the feed-Water and the draft of the furnace. It is fully explained and illustrated in this specification and the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a steam-boiler, taken through the center and the greater part of the draft and feed-water apparatus. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of the Wash-chamber and disk pump, taken on line a: at, Fig. 1, looking to the right.
The object of this invention is to produce an auxiliary apparatus for a steam-boiler for the purpose of heating the feed-water for the boiler by means of the Waste heat from the furnace and at the, same time purifying the gaseous products of the furnace of the smoke and cinders that render the use of soft or bituminous coal in steam plants in the city so objectionable.
Its construction in parts and their arrangement and operation are as follows:
A represents an upright tubular boiler, a a being the drafbtubes surrounded with water up to the line C is the steam-pipe, taking the steam from the space around the tubes a above the line .2.
D is a horizontal pipe, also having drafttubes 0, leading from the upper part of the boiler A to a chamber 13, from the lower side of which a vertical pipe Gextends down into a tank H about twothirds of the distance to the bottom. This vertical pipe G also has draft-tubes of, opening at their upper ends into the chamber 13 and at their lower ends opening into the tank H. The two pipes D and G are closed at their ends around the draft-tubes 0, a and form Waterspaces around said tubes in each pipe capable of standing the pressure carried in the boiler.

A part of the tank H is partitioned off to form a chamber L,Which has a .top made to incline down to the main tank and is corrugated to form troughs c c for the Water to run back to the tank, with perforations i c' in the ridges between the troughs. (See Fig. A draft pump or fan K is placed over a part of the tank H to exhaust the gases, &c., from the upper part of the tank and thereby cause the draft from the furnace F to pass up through the tubes at in the boiler, then through the tubes a in the pipe D, into the chamber B, and down in the direction of the arrows through the tubes a in the pipe G, into the Water e in the tank. This sprayed Water purifies the gases, &c., of the draft going to the pump K from smoke and other products of combustion that may have passed through the Wateriu the tank. The passage of the draft from the tubes a" down into the Water in the tank H separates all the grosser parts of the soot and cinders that accompany the draft from the furnace, and the thorough Washing accomplished by the spraying water as the draft passes over the perforations in the top ofthe chamber L rids it of nearly all its objectionable qualities. The Water in the tank II, which is carried OK to some extent as vapor in the draft, is replenished when necessary by a valve rin the pipe 1, that is connected to the feed-pump N.
The refuse from the furnacedraft that collects in the bottom of the tank H can be removed through the opening 0, provided for that purpose in the side of the tank, and re movable caps y and n are put on the end and top of the chamber B to allow access to the tubes a" and a for the purpose of cleaning them, and a cover t on the top of the boiler A can be removed when it is necessary to clear out the boiler-tubes a a.
\Vhen it is necessary to have a direct draft,
as in getting up steam,when there is no power to run the pump or fan K or when clearing out the tank, a damper b in the pipe J is closed and also the damper y at the top of the pipe G; Then by opening the damper on at the lower end of the pipe P the draft will be carried direct from the pipe D to the pipe P and through the chamber E to the main pipe J.
By means of this apparatus the feed-water in passing through the pipes Gr and D receives sufficient heat from the draft-tubes before entering the boiler, and the draft itself is rendered as nearly unobjectionable by the washing it receives as from its nature it can be.
Having thus described my improvements, I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a boiler plant the combination with a boiler, of a horizontal pipe and a vertical pipe having draft-tubes passing through them,and water-spaces inclosed around said tubes, a closed tank to receive the lower end of said vertical pipe, a screen placed in said tank to form a receptacle from which to take the strained water to wash the outgoing gases, a chamber for said washing process, means for forcing the water from said receptacle to said chamber, means for'drawin g the waste products of the furnace through the tank and draft-tubes, and means for forcing the feedwater through said water-spaces into the boiler, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-boiler plant, the combination with aboiler, of adraft washing-chamber having a perforated and corrugated top, said chamber opening into a tank through which the waste products of the furnace pass, and means for forcing the water from said tank into the chamberto be returned, through its perforated top to the tank again, substantially as described.
