Description
lNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. M. OWEN, OF EIOMER, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
To all 'whom fitmay concern:
Be it known Vthat I, WiLLIAM M. OWEN, of Homer, in the county of Hamilton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Wrench 5 and I d o hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part" of this specilication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
In this wrench the shank of the movable jaw has holes, and the handle has a spring-plug, which latter engages with such one of the holes as may secure the right relative adjustment of the jaws. A lever placed conveniently for the thumb is the means for the withdrawal of the plug for rearrangement.
In the drawings, A is the handle, and B the stationary jaw. G is the movable jaw, and D the stem or shank of the latter, which occupies a long slot in the handle A. In the shank D are holes E, for the purpose of receiving the end of the plug F, which is attached to the pivoted lever Gr, whose bearings are in the stud H, secured to, or cast, or otherwise formed with the handle. A spring, I, under one end ofthe lever keeps it up from the handle A, and the plug F constantly pressed toward the shank D, so as to engage with any of the holes E as they may be brought to the required point.
The mode of operation is described in the description oil the parts; but it may be said that when the jaws are required to be adj usted to any special size of bolt, nut, or other object the lever is pressed by the thumb, so as to elevate the plug F from contact with the shank D. The jaws being then brought to the required distance apart, the plug is allowed to drop into the hole. E which is nearest to the required adjustment, the spring I keepingv it in the position assumed.
Having described my inventiou, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination ofthe handle A, the springlever G, and plug F with the perforated shank D of the movable jaw, substantially as described.
I WM. M. oWEN.
