Description

@uiten tant-@aient @fitta JOSHUA B. BARNES, 0F FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.- Leners Patent Ne. 65,455, dated Jem 4, 18617.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE .AND STUD-WRENGHES.
'IO 'ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA B. BARNES, of Fort Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pipe and Stud-Wrenches; and I hereby declare that the followingis a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the back part of the upper end of the handle with a rack, and also in the combination therewith of the several devices herein set forth. In the drawings annexed, which make a part of this speciiication Figure 1 represents a plan view of my wrench.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 gives a central longitudinal section of the` wrench.
The handle a is formed with aplane surface on its upper and lower sides, and widens by an outward curve (See fig. l.) The end thus widened is serrated at top, and constitutes the jaw n of the at its operating end.
'lhe jaw c is furnished with wrench. e represents the head, or, more properly, the upper jaw of the wrench. two shanks, which embrace the wrench and play on a pivot passing through said wrench; said jaw widens at 1. On the under side ofthe curved end of the jaw e a-nearly rectangular depression is made, and serrated in a manner similar to the lower jaw already described. It will be remarked that when a cylindrical rod is placed between these serrated jaws, and the upper jaw e shall be operated in the manner hereinafter described, that the said rod will be held as long' as desired in an immovable position. fl represents a pawl, one end of which is riveted to the metal plate g, the plate g being pivoted in an opening made to receive it on the outer side ot' jaw e.V The end of plate g, to which the pawl is riveted, is acted on by the spiral spring c, shown in iig. 3. It will be seen that the spring c will, by its operation, force up the end of' the plate ou which the pawl rests, and the other end of the pawl will be driven between the teeth oi" tlie'lowcr jaw of the wrench, and there held at the pleasure of the operator.
In the use of my wrench the following rule will be observed: With the right hand 'disengage the pawl from the teeth in the wrench, and with the left hand push back the jaw e as'far as required. Let the wrench now embrace the rod or'othcr object to be held, and move forward the jaw e as far as needed, and the paivl 0l will hold-it firmly in its position. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'isg- 1. The handle a, when the back portion of the upper end shall be provided with a rack, in combination with jaw e, as and for the purpose specified.
*2. 'lhe pawl cl, spring c, and jaw e, all combined and operated as and for thepurpose described.
In testimony whereof I set my signature in presenceof two witnesses. v
top and is curved in the manner represented by tig.
