GEORGE XVI BOYD, OF SOIPIO, INDIANA.
SCHOOL-DESK ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,819, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed February 23, 1897. Serial No- 624,619. (No model.)
I slate-holder and book-support for schooldesks, and primarilyhasforits object to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment of this character which can be easily attached to the desk and arranged to be set at any angle desired by the scholar.
My invention has also for its object to provide a hinged slate member for desks adapted to support a book and having adjustable means for holding the book open and for holding it at the desired slant.
With other objects in view, which hereinafter will be referred to, the invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be first described in detail and then specifically set out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a schooldesk having my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the slate-frame swung up to an elevated position in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjustable book-holder.
In its practical construction my invention comprises a suitable frame 1, which is detach: ably hinged at the lower end 2 to the front edge of the desk, as clearly shown, so its upper end can be swung up to slant the same to any angle desired. The frame 1 carries a slate portion 3 and is preferably hinged at one end of the desk, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to admit of the use of simple adjusting or rest devices being employed without mutilating or cutting into the desk.
. 6 indicates a pendent rack member, which is rilivotally connected to one edge of the frame such a manner that its rack-face will ex tend down through a guide or clip 7, driven into the edge of the desk, as clearly shown, a suitable spring 8 being arranged to hold the said rack-face in engagement with the clip, it also having a handle 9 to facilitate its adjustment.
So far as described it will be readily seen angle desired by the scholar.
' To adapt the frame las a book-holder, the same has a strip or ledge 10 at the lower end, which forms a support for the lower end of the book. (See Fig. 1.)
Tohold the book open, the slate-frame at one side, preferably the left, has an adjustable holder, which is in the nature of a springwire clamp 11, formed of a single pieceof wire bent to form an outwardly-curved U-shaped book-engaging loop, spring-coils 12 at the ends of the sides of the loop, and straight arms or slide members 13, movable in eyes 14 on the slate-frame, such members 13 also having upturned ends 15 to provide stops to prevent their pulling out of the guides or eyes 14:.
By making the leaf-holder slidable in its guides. 14 it is manifest the loop l1 can be pulled from over the edge of the book when turning a leaf and quickly slipped back in place without danger of tearing the leaves.
- By providing a deskattachment of the nature described and shown the same in use will keep the scholar from lying on his desk or resting his chin on his hands, as the slate or the book can be held at any angle to suit, and thereby enable him to maintain an erect position and avoid stooping.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved desk attachment, the combination with the desk, of the slate-frame hinged at its lower end to the front edge of the desk, said frame being disposed at one end of the desk and having a book-supporting ledge at the lower end, a guide or loop 7 secured to the desk, a pendent rack member pivoted to the slate-frame having a spring 8 for normally holding it in contact with the guide, and a handle member 9, and a laterally-adjustable book -.clamp secured to the other end of the frame, said clamp consisting of a single spring-wire member havinga central upturned U shaped loop, spring-coils 12, slide members 13 and stops 15 the slateframe having eyes 14: to receive said members 13, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
