To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NEWTON S. DAVIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful lm rovements in Book-Holders, of which the 'ollowing is a specification.

My invention pertains to holders for books, magazines and the like; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction, novel combinations and adaptation of parts hereinafter described and articularly pointed out in the claims appenr ed.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the book holder constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of theholder with some of the arts in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail vertica section showing the arrangement of the book rest or shelf relative to the side bars of the frame.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

My novel book holder is designed to be fastened on a chair arm, table top or the like, and for effecting such connection I provide The said clamp comprises a body a, preferably of cast iron,

Extending throu h and engaging the thread. of the lug d is a threaded rod B for supporting the body of the holder. The sai rod B is designed to be turned through the threaded aperture e in the lug d in order to raise or lower the holder body as occasion demands, and is passed loosely through the sleeve f in order to enable the latter to guide and hold it against sagging. The set screw g of the sleeve f has for its office to adjustably fix the rod B against rotation when the latter is in the position desired.

The holder body comprises a Wire frame having an upper cross bar it, side bars i, and arms j reaching forward from the lower ends of the side bars and terminating in short upwardly extending portions is, a book rest or support Z, formed of a single piece of sheetmetal and having a base portion channeled at m to receive the arms of the frame and also having an u wardly extending portion dis posed at a rig t angle to the base ortion and channeled at n to receive the si e bars i of the frame and also having loo s p embracing said side bars, a bar r exten ing across the upper portion of the frame and designed to support the upper portion of a book or the like, and clips .9 arranged on the upper portions of the frame bars 2' and designed to engage the leaves of a book so as to retain the book in an 0 en state on the holder body. The bar r an the clips 8 are formed of a single piece of wire of smaller caliber than the rame, and, at oints intermediate the ends of said bar an the clips, the said piece of wire is coiled about the side bars 2 of the frame, as indicated by t. Thus it will be seen that the bar 1" and the clips 8 are frictionally held against casual movement on the frame, and that the said bar and the clips may be adjusted together up or down on the frame to best suit the holder to the size of the book to be held.

The holder body is connected with the su porting rod B through the medium of a bar preferably of sheet-metal, which extends between and is connected to the side bars 11 of the frame, a bifurcated member D which is swiveled to and extends rearwardly from the bar 0, a link E having flattened ends dis o'sed in the bifurcation of said member D an in a bifurcation at the upper end of the rod V, a bolt F extending through the bifurcated member and the upper end of the link E and equipped with a wmg-nut G, and a bolt H exten ing through the bifurcated end of the rod B and the lower end of the link E and equipped with a wing-nut I. By virtue of the construction of the said connection it will be manifestthat the holder body may be placed and adjustably fixed in various positions to suit the convenience of a reader, and that the holder body is free to swing on the bifurcated member D and assume and remain of itself in an u right position.

It will be gathere from the foregoing that my novel book holder is simple and strong in construction, and is adapted to be quickly and easily adjusted and adjustably fixed to hold a book or magazine in the position most convenient to a reader.

As before stated the construction herein shown and described constitutes the best embodiment of my invention known to me, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as defined in the claims appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In a book holder, the combination with a frame having side bars, of a cross-bar extending between the side bars, leaf-holding clips, and coils surrounding and frictionally en aging the side bars of the frame; the said coi s being arranged between andformed integral with the cross-bar and the clips.

2. In a book holder, the combination with a frame having an upper crossbar and depending side bars which are integral with said cross-bar and terminate at their lower ends in forwardly reaching arms having upwardly extending portions at their forward ends; of a book-rest formed of a single piece of sheet-metal and having a base portion resting on and sup orted by the said arms of the frame bars and also having an upwardly eX- tending portion provided with loops which receive said frame bars.

3. A book holder comprising a clamp, an upright rod adjustably fixed against vertical movement with respect to said clamp, a link adjustably fixed to the upright and arranged to be swung vertically, a member adjustably connected to the link, a frame having an upper cross-bar and depending side bars which are integral with said cross-bar and terminate at their lower ends in forwardly reaching arms having upwardly extending portions at their forward ends and also having a crossbar swiveled on the said member, an upper cross-bar 1 extending between the side bars of the frame, leaf-holding clips, coils surrounding and frictionally engaging the side bars of NEWTON S. DAVIS.
