NUT-LOCK'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,557, dated August 3, 1897.
Application led November 2l, 1896. Serial No. 613,000. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that l, MATTHEW REARDON, of Moravia, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to nut-locks, and especially to those which are applied to shplates for rail-joints, although this invention can be applied to lock-nutsin any place when they are liable to be loosened by vibration or otherwise. v
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient lock which will retain the nuts in their proper positions as set up and which can be easily removed when desired. It comprises a plate of sheet metal properly mortised to receive the nut or nuts and a spring clip or clasp usually applied at each end to hold the plate in position and at the same time readily detachable for any purpose. It is described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a side elevation of the rail-joint. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof upon the dotted line in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof upon the dotted line in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective of a clip suitable for the purpose.
A A represent suitable rails, and 2 2 are suitable fish plates recessed in the usual manner or in any suitable manner in their faces, as at 3. This fish-plate can be of any. other shape, if desired. The bolts 4. are in serted through the rails and iish-plates, and their nuts 5 are secured thereon in the usual way. All this is old and does not constitute a part of my invention.
A suitable plate 6, usually of sheet metal, is provided with mortises 7 of a number equal to the number of nuts to be locked, into which mortises the several nuts t when the plate is applied, substantially as shown. This plate is securedin place removably by means of a clip or clasp 8, having one arm 9, which fits into the recess 3 in the fish-plate, and an arm l0, which fits over the outside of this lockingplate, and is provided with an inwardly-projecting lug, boss, or stud ll, which enters a suitable recess in the outer face of the locking-plate and holds the clip in position and prevents its additional dislodgment. This clip is preferably of spring metal, and the stud 11 is usually beveled, so that when certain longitudinal strain is applied to the nut it will be readily detached and then will unlock the locking-plate for its removal from the nuts.
