RAILWAY-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,078, dated July 6, 1897.
Application filed De 2,1896. Serial No. 614,236. (No model.)
To all 1072,0117, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT L. STILLMAN, of Charlestown, in the county of WVashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RailwayJoints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Wooden fish-plates. 0 shows the single metal angle fish-plate.
From practical tests Ifind that wooden fishplates make exceptionally smooth railwayjoints and hold therail ends in good alinement, with the exception of a downward cut ting of said rail ends into the Wood. To over 0 come this difficulty, I gain a single small a11- gle-plate of steel into the inner wooden fishplate and under the abutting rail ends, as the weight of the cars comes mainly inside of the center of the rails. will be seen that smooth joints will be secured and downward cutting of the rail ends prevented.
Having thus described my improvement, I
claim as my invention and desire to secure 40 by Letters Patent- A railway-joint composed of a pair of wooden fish-plates with a single metal angle fishplate gained into one of the said Wooden fi'sh plates for the support of abutting rail ends, 45
substantially as specified.
