FREDERICK r. HUNKLE', or MQKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-TIE AND FASTENER.
1 '0 aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FREDERICK P. HUNKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention aims to provide simply con- I structed and inexpensive yet highly efiicient and durable means for clamping railway ralls to tles formed of I-beams or the like.
With the foregoing general object in Fig. 2 is a horizontal section cut on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4: are vertical transversesections on the planes indicated respectively by the lines 33 and H of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the rail clamping levers;
Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the wedges employed for holding said levers in operative position; and
Fig. 7 is yet another perspective view showing more particularly one of the bolts and washers employed for securing the wedges in operative position. I
In the drawing above briefly described the numeral 1 designates a tie formed of an I-beam having the usual outstanding flanges 2 at its upper and lower edges, the upper flanges serving to support thereon the rails 3.
Formed through the uppermost flanges at points disposed adjacent the bases of the rails 3 are openings 4 in which rail clamping levers 5 are fulcrumed, the fulcrums of said levers preferably consisting of vertically extending necks 6 which join the body portions thereof with integral heads 7 which overlie the bases of the rails as shown clearly in the several views.
The aforesaid body portions of the levers Specification of Letters Patent.
5 are inclined downwardly from the necks 6 and wedges 8 are driven between said portions and the lower flanges of the tie 1, the upper edges of said wedges having longitudinally extending flanges 9 between which and the body of the tie the said body portions of the levers are confined as depicted clearly in Figs. 2, 3 and 4-, whereby the levers are held against lateral movement. The wedges 8 are preferably stamped from I metal plates as will be clear from the drawings and suitable portions thereof are preferably forced outwardly at 10 and formed with slots 11, teeth 12 being provided along the opposite edges of the slots.
'loothed washers-13 are mounted on bolts 1% which pass through the slots 11 and through the body of the tie 1, the teeth of said washers engaging the teeth 12 to lock the wedges 8 against movement when the nuts 15 of the bolts 14 are tightened. Loosening of said nuts, however, will permit the wedges to be released whereupon the levers 5 may be either withdrawn from the openings 4 or merely rocked therein to permit the rails 3 to be removed for the substitution of others or for other purposes.
By constructing the invention inthe manner shown and described, it will not only be simple and inexpensive, but it will be highly efficient and durable. For these reasons the construction shown constitutes the preferred form of the improved tie and fastencr but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, nu-' merous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
I claim:
1..A railway tie having an outstanding flange along its upper edge formed with an openingnear one end of the tie, arail clamping lever fulcrumed in said opening, a horizontally movable wedge slidable along one side of the tie for forcing said lever to and holding it in operative position, and means for locking said wedge against movement.
9. A railway tie having an outstanding flange along its upper edge formed with an opening near one end of the tie, a rail. clamping lever fulcrumed in said opening, a wedge slidable along one side of the tie and hearing at one edge against the lever for forcing it to and holding it in operative position, a flange on said edge of the wedge Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
Application filed November 6, 1916. Serial No. 129,792. I
between which and the tie the lever is confined, and means for locking said wedge against movement. 7
A railway tie having outstanding flanges along its upper and loweredges, the upper flange having near one end an opening, a' rail clamping lever fulcrumed in 'said opening and having an inclined body portion disposed between the two flanges, 21- wedge slidable between said inclined body portion of the lever and one of the aforesaid flanges, and means for locking said wedge against movement.
-l-. The combination with a railway tie, of a rail clamping lever fulcrlnued thereon and having an inclined body portion disposed adjacent one side of the tie, a horizontally movable wedge contacting with said inclined portion of the lever for forcing the latter to and holding it in operative position, and means for locking said wedge against movement.
5. The-combination with a railway tic, of a rail clamping; lever fulcrumed thereon and having an inclined body portion disposed adjacent one side of said tie, a horizontally movable wedge contacting with said inclined portion of the lever for forcing it to and holding it in operative position, said wedge having a longitudinally extending flange between which and the tie said inclined portion of the lever is confined and means for locking said wedgeagainst movement.
('3. he combination with a railway tie having an outstanding horizontal flange, of a rail clamping levervfulcrumed on said tie and having an inclined body portion FREDERICK P. HUNKLE.
