SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,343, dated June 29, 1897. Application filed February 24, 1896- Serial No. 580,387. (No model.)

Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. POMROY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Checkrein-Stop for Harness for Horses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for the purpose of preventing the end of the checkrein to the harness for horses from being detached or unfastened from the saddle-hook to the harness by the motion of the horses head; and the object of my improvement is to provide a device that will effectually prevent the horse from unfastening his checkrein from the saddle-hook, be simple and cheap, and so constructed as to be applied to all ordinary saddle-hooks with slight, if any, variation in construction. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective, showing the application of my invention to the ordinary saddle-hook of a harness for horses. Fig. 2 shows a top view of my invention applied to an ordinary saddle-hook. Fig. 3 is a front View of same, and Fig. 4is a side elevation of same.

A represents the saddle or pads to an ordinary harness for horses; B, the saddle or checkrein hook; O, the end or broken section of an ordinary checkrein attached to the saddle-hook; a, a small piece of rubber or other material of the form substantially shown in the drawings or other suitable form and provided with a suitable transverse hole for receiving the saddle-hook and also two small longitudinal holes or other suitable device for the purpose of receiving the ends of a bent wire, which may be of spring-wire or otherwise and which I prefer to have bent in substantially the form. shown in the drawings. By means of the spring in the wire, or elasticity in the piece a when made of rubber or other elastic material, the outer and upper end of the wire is held close up against the under side of the hook B. The elasticity of the sides of the rubber part a, when made of rubber, is sufficient to hold same securely on the hook B, the transverse hole being made smaller than the saddle-hook, and when said part a is made of other material it can be secured by any suitable means or even made a part of the hook B in manufacture.

The operation of my invention is as followsi When the checkrein is put on the hook, theouter end of the wire I) is depressed and the checkrein is put on in the ordinary manner, and when it is desired to unfasten the checkrein the outer end of the wire I) is again depressed and the checkrein detached in the ordinary manner. When the checkrein is in place and the horse throws up his head, the end of the rein will naturally pass through the space between the sides of the wire I), and the top of the Wire will prevent same from passing back and off of the hook, even if the force should be sufficient to depress the wire. Further, there is sufficient spring in the wire I) or in the rubber part a in all ordinary cases to prevent the end of the checkrein from depressing the outer end of the wire and passing off over the end of the saddle-hook.

Having fully described my invention and its operations, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. An elastic piece a. provided with a suit able central transverse hole of proper size to tightly grip the saddle-hook near its base, and further provided with other suitable holes on opposite sides of said transverse hole and at about right angles thereto in combination with the part b the ends of which are fastened in said last-mentioned two holes and the outer end so formed that the sides will extend upward each side of the lower side of said saddle-hook and the central part impinge against said saddle-hook, all in combination with the saddle-hook to a harness for horses, as above set forth and substantially as described.

2. A checkrein-stop consisting of an elastic piece or provided with a suitable transverse 9 hole to engage the saddle-hook near its base, a wire secured to said elastic piece and eX- tending rearwardly and upwardly to the under side of said saddle-hook near its point, in

combination with said saddle-hook, all as above set forth and substantially as described.
