ATTACHMENT FOR CHECKREINS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,003, dated May 4, 1897.

To all whom it concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Checkreins, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to checkrein attachments for horses; and the object thereof is to provide an-improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to yield when in use so as to permit of a freer movement of the head of the horse than is ordinary with this class of devices.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a partial side View of a horse provided with a harness and my improved checkrein attachment, and Fig. 2 a plan View of the attachment detached.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout both views.

In the practice of my invention I secure to or form on the saddle-harness 5 the usual hook or loop 6, and in connection therewith I employ the attachment 7, which serves as means for connecting the checkrein 8 with the saddle.

The attachment 7 consists of two similar end links 9, one of which is provided with a loop 14, by means of which it is connected with the hook 6 of the saddle, and the links 9 are connected by a spiral spring 10, the ends of which are secured to said links, as shown at 11. Connected with each of the links and extending through the spiral spring 10 and interlocking with each other is a wire loop or yoke 12, the ends of the sides of which are connected with the links 9 at each side of the connection of the spring 10, as shown at 13, and said wire loops or yokes are adapted to swing or freely move on said links. As thus constructed it will be seen that while the spring 10 normally holds the links 9 in the position shown in Fig. 2 said links may be separated against the operation of said spring as far as the wire loops or yokes 12 will permit. This separation of the links is not sufficient to destroy the elasticity of the spring, and as soon as the strain or pull is removed from the links the spring will again assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The wire loops or yokes 12, or the body portions thereof, are shown only in dotted lines in Fig. 2, but the construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawings.

One of the links 9 serves as means for connecting the checkrein with the attachment, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation a and perfectly adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, and by means thereof the checkrein will not be held rigidly, as is ordinarily the case in this class of devices, but the free movement thereof within certain limits is provided.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described attachment for checkreins, comprising the combination with the hook or loop of a saddle and checkrein of a bridle of two similar end links one of which is provided with a loop adapted to be connected with said hook, said links being connected with a spiral spring, a wire loop or yoke connected with each of said links and extending through said spiral spring and interlocking with each other, the ends of the sides of which are connected with the said links at each side of the connection of the spring, said yokes being adapted to swing or move freely on said links, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
