COMBINATION-ERASER.
SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,419, dated May 11, 1897. Application filed July 2, 1894- Serial No- 5l6,393. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGIAE. GREEN and LEANDRO A. BORGES, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination-Erasers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a combined eraser comprising a blade and a rotary or revolving eraser-disk; and our .invention consists in the combination of the blade and the disk and the manner of connecting them, and also, in combination therewith, a bnrnishing or smoothing tip and a brush, as fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims. Figure I is a side elevation illustrative of our invention. Fig. II is a top or plan view. Fig. III is a section taken on line III III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a side View showing a different form of blade. Fig. V is a side view showing a bnrnishing or rubbing tip and a brush combined with the blade and disk. Fig. VI is a section taken on line VI VI, Fig. V, and showing our preferred manner of connecting the tip and brush to the blade.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an.
eraser-blade which may have two edges, as shown in Figs. 1, II, and V, or may have a single edge, as shown in Fig. IV. The stem of this blade aifords a finger-grip and has an integral projecting fork 2, formed of two spring-arms having their ends inturned toward each other to form projections 5. Fitting between the arms of the fork is an eraserdisk 3 of the ordinary form. central cavity or opening 4, in which fit inwardly-extending projections 5, formed on the ends of the arms of the fork 2. The arms of the fork spring apart sufficiently to permit of the insertion of the disk and its removal when it is to be replaced by a new disk.
When in place, the disk revolves freely, so that all parts of it can be used without being interfered with by the blade.
The disk has a In using the device the stem of the blade is grasped by the fingers, the disk serving as a head for the blade and affording a handgrip. WVhen the disk is used, it is grasped in the ordinary manner and the blade allowed to hang by gravity in a vertical or approximately vertical position, or to rest by gravity on the support upon which the paper rests,
and thus the blade does not interfere with the use of the disk, while the disk aids materially in grasping the instrument for cutting or scratching.
In Fig. V we vided with a bnrnishing or smoothing tip 6, which is tapped into the stem of the blade, as shown at 7, Fig. VI. It has an extension 8 to receive the socket 9 of a brush 10. The
brush 1 0 is designed to be used for brushing 6 5 the loose matter from the paper after the eraser is used, and the tip 6 is designed to be used to smooth or burnish the portion of the paper upon which the eraser has been used.
By making the brush and tip removable the former, or both the former and the latter, may be removed by those not desiring to use them.
The deviceis a simple and convenient combination of blade and disk, which are always 7 5 together and ready for use.
We claim as our invention- 1. In an eraser, the combination of ablade, an erasing-disk connected to the blade, and a smoothing-tip fitted in the stem of the blade,
forward of the disk, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a blade, having a forked stein, a disk fitted in the fork of the blade, a tip tapped into the stem of the blade,
forward of the disk, and a brush removably secured to an extension of the tip; substantially as set forth.
