To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK GRANT, a citi Zen of the United States of America, and resident of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Toilet Use, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device for toilet use, such as a shaving brush, a tooth brush or other utensil or object, or both combined, and has for one of its objects to provide a casing or inclosure for the brush, or supplemental brush, or other object so that when not in use the same will be covered, but when in use the casing may serve as the handle by which the brush is held and manipulated.

Other objects of the invention will be rendered apparent in conjunction with the description of the device and the manner of utilization of the same.

The invention is described in connection with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.

In the drawings :Figure 1 shows a longitudinal sectional View of a combined shaving brush and a casing therefor,the brush being represented as being inclosed within the casing at the time of disuse. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing reversed relations of the parts so that the brush is distended and the casing available for use as a handle. 7

In the drawings, A represents a shaving brush having a circular shank B formed with a forwardly tapering portion a and also with a rearwardly tapering portion 6.

G represents a cylindrical shell or casing open at both ends and having the wall therein near one end formed with a forwardly or outwardly beveled surface cl and with a rearwardly or inwardly beveled surface 7, for the engagement therewith of either of the 1nclined or tapered portions 6 or a of the brush accordingly as the latter is inclosed within the casing as shown in Fig. 1, or by reversal, as shown in Fig. 2, is in its extended position for use.

The casing C is provided at different points in its length with perforations g which are inclined inwardly toward the end of the casing which is opposite said tapered surfaces (Z and 7". used and while more or less wet for the drying of the latter. Said perforations by having the inclinations as shown avoid the presence of sharp corners or shoulders against which ends of the bristles of the shaving brush may engage when the latter is drawn out from the casing with the ends of the bristles foremost, such inclinations also preventing protrusion of the bristles through the perforations.

hen the shaving brush is inserted in the casing to the position shown in Fig. 1, the bristles are by the brush shank B with which they are connected drawn with their free ends trailing so that the likelihood of their engaging in the perforations and becoming buckled is obviated. The brush shank B is provided with a short knob h which is of utility in drawing the shank to its binding engagement in the internally tapered casing.

lVhen the brush is to be inclosed it is inserted shank foremost in the right hand open end of the casing and moved so that its beveled portion 6 is inengagement with the beveled portion f of the casing; the shank is then given an endwise draft and twist for perfecting the engagement between the surfaces 6 and 7 so that the brush is firmly retained in its engagement in the casing.

hen the shaving brush is to be displaced from the casing, endwise reversed and connected at the other end of the casing for use, it is pushed out, preferably, through the medium. of the knob h and brought to engagement, its tapered surface at having the pinching engagement in the beveled surface (Z at the mouth of the casing.

The shank B of the brush formed with reversed tapers a, I), as shown, is provided with lengthwise ranging channels a a so that especially when the parts are in the positions and relations shown in Fig. 1, there may be an entrance for air through the end of the casing and by way of such channels to the internal portion of the casing in which the bristles of the brush are inclosed for supplementing the means for drying out the brush.

The device described as apparent is convenient and desirable for onehaving occasion to travel frequently as the parts are susceptible of ready utilization and thereafter when carried in a suit case or traveling bag, the brush or brushes are practically inclosed and the fact that the latter may be more or less wet is of no consequence or detriment.

I claim 1. A brush carrying member, including a shank of circular cross section, correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered from its middle, and a cylindrical casing open at each end having the wall therein at one end formed with correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered portions for the engagement therewith of either of the inclined portions of the brush carrying member accordingly as the latter is inclosed within the casing, or, by reversal, as in an extended position for use. 7

2. A brush carrying member including a shank of circular cross section, correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered from its middle, and a cylindrical casing open at each end having thewall therein at one end formed with correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered portions, and provided at different points in its length with perforations.

3. A brush carrying member, including a shank of circular cross section correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered from its middle, and a cylindrical casing open at each end having the wall therein at one end formed with correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered portions and provided at different points in its length removed from the said tapered portions with perforations which are inclined outwardly channels, and a cylindrical casing open at each end having the wall therein at one end formed with correspondingly forwardly and rearwardly tapered portions for the engagement therewith of either of the inclined portions of the brush carrying member.
