useful Improvement in Safety-Loops for Harness-Ohecks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the loop used on harness checks or checkreins, which engages with check-line hook on the saddle; and it consists substantially of a double loop, forming the loose or free end of the checkrein and constructed, as hereinafter specifically set forth and described, in such a manner as to make it impossible that the loop should become detached from the hook by any action of the horses head.

In addition my improved device is so con- 7 structed as to give additional play or freedom to the checkrein and consequent ease and comfort to the horse without loosening the tension of the rein. Y

Accompanying this specification and forming a part of it is one plate of drawings containing three figures, in all. of which similar letters refer to corresponding parts.

Figure 1 shows my invention in operation. Fig. 2 is a plan View of my invention viewed from above. Fig. 3 shows a modified method of constructing my invention.

My improved loop .is constructed and applied as follows: Taking some springy substance or material, preferably a coiled spring S, I attach it at one end of the buckle D, which terminates the free end of the checkrein R, by means of the rivet B, which unites buckle D and plate P, secured to spring S in such wise that buckle D can be turned like a swivel. At the other end of spring S, I secure by means of the loop L, which is secured to the opposite sides of spring S, or by any other convenient means, as by double spiral springs s s, constructed,preferably, of coiled wire, the outer coils s s of which I prolong and form into the loop A and the inner coils s s of which I prolong and form into the smaller loop A, the said spirals forming a spring that acts laterally on the loops A A. These two loops I provide with a flexible or soft covering or.

My device being constructed and attached to the checkrein R, as above set forth, I adjust it to the saddle-hook H in the manner indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1. Loops A and A are sprung together and both at once passed through the opening in the hook 1-1. When in proper position, as shown in Fig. 1, loop A performs the function of the ordinary harness-check loop, while loop A, actuated by the spring formed of the two spirals s 3, forms a stay or brace against the inner face of the hook H, which effectually prevents the checkrein from being detached, unless desired, from the saddle-hook.

The drawings show my device applied to a side bearing checkrein. It will be evident that by means of the swivel attachment it can be equally well applied to an overhead checkrein.

Fig. 3 shows a different manner of constructing my invention, the double loops A and A, the spirals s s, and the spring S being constructed'of one continuous piece of wire, the upper end of which is adjusted to the buckle D and hammered into a pin-head.

My improvement can be easily adjusted to any size or style of checkrein or harnesscheck and looks well when in use. Besides this, it is of absolute comfort to the horse, while without being loose it allows an ease to the mouth that is impossible with the ordinary checkreins. It also relieves, in a great measure, the strain upon the checkrein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, the checkrein-loop consisting of the loops A and A, furnished with a flexible covering and constructed with the springs s s',and the spring S, secured to said springs s s by a band or loop L and provided with a plate P, attached to the buckle D by means of the rivet B, as hereinbefore described and set forth.

2. The combination, with a checkrein R, of the loops A and A, furnished with a flexible covering and constructed with the laterallyacting springs s s, the spring S, to which said springs s s are connected by means of the band or loop L, and the buckle D, as hereinbefore described and set forth.
