Description

Patented May 4, 1897.
[NI/11708 m A Tram/Em? Unr'rnn dramas Arnr prion,
JOSEPH EAKINS, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE OR GRIP FOR ROPES OR CORDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,853, dated May 4, 1897'. Application filed January 22, 1897. fierial No. 620,205. (No model.)
To a 11/71/0722 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH EAKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles or Grips for Ropes or Cords, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grips or handles for ropes, cords, and cables; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted for use in connection with cords of window-blinds, skippingropes, and on all ropes, cords, or lines where it is intended or desired to apply a handle or grip thereto for pulling thereon.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved handle or grip and showing the method of the operation thereof, and Fig. 2 a cross-section.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a section of an ordinary rope or cord, and in the practice of my invention I provide a handle or grip 6, which is preferably oblong in form and cylindrical in cross-section and which is provided with a central longitudinal here or passage 7, and formed in one side thereof is a transverse oblong chamber or cavity 8,which extends to and communicates with the central bore or passage 7, and the central bore or passage 7 or the walls thereof opposite said chamber or cavity 8 are provided with notches or recesses 9, and I also provide an oblong rectangular plug or block 10, which is of the same form in cross-section as said chamber or cavity 8 and which is also provided at each end with inwardly-directed lugs or projections 11, and mounted on the grip or handle 6 and adapted to slide thereon is a tubular sleeve 12, which is slightly conical in form, and the handle or grip 6 is also slightly conical in form at the point where the chamber or cavity 8 is formed.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In practice the cord or rope 5 is passed through the grip or handle 6, the sleeve 12 of the block or plug 10 being removed for this purpose, after which said block is placed in the cavity or chamber 8 and depressed, so as to press upon the rope or cord 5, and the sleeve 12 is then moved into position thereover, and this operation forces the block or plug 10 inwardly, so that it firmly grips the rope or cord, the lugs or projections 11 serving to facilitate this operation and to force the rope or cord into the notches or recesses 9.
This device serves as a perfect lock to hold the rope or cord, and the handle or grip cannot be moved thereon without first sliding the sleeve 12 off or from over the block or plug 10.
My improvement is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A handle or grip for cords, ropes and cables, said handle or grip being provided with a longitudinal central bore, and in one side thereof, with a transverse chamber or cavity in which is placed a movable plug or block, which is adapted to press on the rope, cord or cable, and said handle or grip being also provided with a sliding sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
2. A handle or grip for cords, ropes, and cables, said handle or grip being provided with a longitudinal central bore, and in one side thereof, with a transverse chamber or cavity in which is placed a movable plug or block which is adapted to press on the cord, rope or cable, and said handle or grip being also provided with a sliding sleeve, and said block or plug being provided with inwardlydirected lugs or projections, substantially as shown and described.
3. A handle or grip for ropes, cords and cables, said handle or grip being provided with a longitudinal central bore, and in one side thereof, with a transverse chamber or cavity in which is placed a movable plug or block which is adapted to press on the cord, rope or cable, and said handle or grip being also provided With a sliding sleeve, and said block or plug being provided with inwardlydirected lugs or projections and the central bore of the grip or handle being provided 0p- I posite said chamber or cavity with notches or recesses, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 20th day of January, 1897.
JOSEPH EAKINS.
