H119 the usual'manner m'order to enable the jaws to be turned. When spreading the jaws the shoulders 6 engage so that the handles and the arms 4, are rigid from end to end and move as a unit. When contracting the handles without any pressure being on the jaws to resist their closing the shoulders will still remain practically engaged, since the pivots 5" are tight enough to prevent turning of r the handles relative to the arms under block will move further into the opening 8 and will spread the lugs 7. This spreading "or thelugs imparts a closing action to the jaws. The latter will be then firmly gripped against the nut, and when a rotative pressure is imparted to the pliers, with the neutral contracting pressure being maintained on the handles while so doing, said jaws will not have any tendency to slip on the nut or separate; This is because -the leverage force between the handles and the jaws is increased considerably by the interposition of the wedge block.
' From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
\Vhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such dev-ia: tions from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit ,of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. c
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is":

A pliers comprising "a pairof opposed "jaw and handle members pivoted together intermediate their ends and arranged to cause a contracting movement of the hano dies to normally lmpart a closing movement to the jaws, and means between the handle members and jawsfor increasing the force tending to close the jaws when the handles are contracted.

3. A pliers comprising a pair of opposed jaw and handle members pivoted together intermediate their ends and arranged to cause a contracting movement of the handles to normally impart a closing movement to the jaws, one of said handle members having an inwardly breaking pivoted jointi'n termediate its ends, and leverage increasing means between the handle members outwa'rdly of the pivoted point and the jaws for imparting a closing movement to the jaws when said handle member breaks at said joint.

A Ipliers comprising a pair of opposed" j am, a pivot connecting the same, opposed handle members for operatingthe jaws, op-' posed lugs formed rigid withthe jaws and projecting beyond the jaw pivot in a direction opposite to the jaws, theadjacent transversely disposed faces ofthe jaws being disposed at an acute angle to each other, a wedge block to fitbetween and engage said faces, and "means between the handle members and block for causing the latter to move lengthwise of the lugs to spread the same and inove the'ja'ws toward'a closed position, when the handle members are contracted.
