Description

G. P. DARROW.
Plow-Clevis.
.No. 57,436. Patented Aug. 21, 1866.
ILPEYERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. P. DARROW, .OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOSEPH HARGRAVE.
IMPROVEM ENT IN PLOW-CLEVIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,436, dated August 21, 1866.
terrupted screw-thread, whereby the entire clevis is enabled to be finished in the sand, and whereby, when in use, it is free from liability to clog by dirt or rust or to jam by the riding of one thread of the screw upon another.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view, representing a clevis embodying my in- Vention.
A is the upper or plain eye of the clevis. B is the lower eye, its screw-thread 0 being interrupted by two longitudinal channels, 0 c, coincident with the partingline of the mold.
The thread E of the bolt D is, like that of the eye in the clevis, interrupted by longitudinal blanks e e in the line of parting, and it is further interrupted by the omission of alternate segments of the thread, causing the threads to occupy a much less space than the intervals. i
The provision of the longitudinal channels and blanks enables both clevis and bolt to be completed in the foundry-by the simple acts of molding and casting, any fin left by the parting occurring wholly at the said channels and blanks, and not at all interfering with the functions of the screw.
The omission of every alternate thread also facilitates molding by permitting a greater body of sand between the threads, and, in connection with the longitudinal blanks and channels, permits the escape of dirt which otherwise might act to clog the parts in the act of inserting and removing the bolt.
I claim herein as new and of my invention Forming the clevis and bolt by casting the same with interrupted threads, in the manner and forthe purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
GEO. P. DARROW.
Witnesses GEo. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
