W. H. ARNER. END GATE FASTENING.
N0. 573 848. Patented Dec. 29, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM HERBERT ARNER, OF GROVELAND, NEW YORK.
END-GATE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,848, dated December 29, 1896. Application filed May 13,1896. Serial No. 591,447. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HERBERT ARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Groveland, Livingston county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in end-gates for wagons, and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and effective device of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a section of the end-gate of a wagon, showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing the parts in position for closing the end-gate; and Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the gate closed.
1 represents the end-gate, and 2 2the vertical cleats secured to the side-board, and between which the end-gate slides.
3 represents a cast-metal socket secured by screws to the outside of the side-board, its cylindrical shank 4 extending inwardly through an orifice in 'the side-board. This shank 4 is internally screw-threaded to receive the threaded end 6 of the eyebolt 7, which is longitudinally adjustable therein, as shown.
8 represents a cast-lnetal shoe or plate secured by screws to the outside of the endgate. This plate 8 is formed with two integral parallel arms 9 9, in which are fulcrumed the bifurcated ends 10 10 of a hand-lever 12.
13 represents a hook, one end of which is provided with a horizontal eye 14:, pivoted on a rivet 15, secured between the ends 10 10 of the lever 12, while the outer end of said hook is adapted to detachably engage the eye of the eyebolt 7.
16 represents a fiat or leaf spring secured by a screw 17 to the lever 12, its free end resting against the inner end of the hook 13.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the hook is shown in engagement with the eyebolt, and if the hand-lever 12 be pressed in toward the gate the side of the body is drawn in toward the contiguous end of the end-gate and firmly clamped, as shown in Fig. 3.
When it is necessary to adjust the parts to compensate for wear, the eyebolt can be readily screwed farther into its socket, which decreases the distance between the side-board and the fulcrum-point of the hand-lever, and consequently the parts are drawn closer together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-- 1. Thesocket 3 having an integral. internally-screw-threaded shank 4, the eyebolt 7, the threaded end 6 of which is adj ustably secured in said socket, in combination with the hand-lever 12, having its bifurcated end fulcrumed in the arms 9 9 of the plate 8, and the horizontal hook 13, pivoted at one end between the bifurcated ends of said lever and its free end adapted to engage the eyebolt 7, substantially as shown and described.
2. The socket 3, havinginternally-threaded shank 4, the eyebolt 7 adjustably secured therein, in combination with the lever B, having its end fulcrumed in the arms 9 9 of the plate 8, the hook 13 pivoted at one end to said lever, and having its free end in contact with said eyebolt, and the spring 16 secured at one end to said lever and having its free end in operative contact with said hook, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Groveland, in the county of Livingston, in the State of New York, this 21st day of January, 1890.
WILLIAM HERBERT ARNER.
Witnesses 4 CHARLES L. ARNER,
WILLIAM BARBER.
