Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. M. NEWBURY, OF SPAR'IA, WISCONSIN.
APPARATUS FOR CLEANING BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,252, dated July 10, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. M. NEWBURY, of Sparta, Monroe county, State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Cleaning Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a front-side view of my improved foot-cleaner. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same through the line .fr m, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object the furnishing an apparatus by means of which the dust, mud, snow, Svc., may be removed from both the sides and soles of boots and shoes; and it consists of an apparatus formed by combining a hinged clasp with the brush, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the foundation or lower part of the clasp, and is secured to the door-step or other suitable support by the screws B.
C and D are the jaws ofthe clasp. The jaw D is immovably attached to the foundation A, and has a hole through its side for the passage of the bolt E. The jaw C is hinged to the jaw D and foundation A by the pin F passing through the lower end of the shank ofthe said jaw C and through the projection Gr, formed on the foundation A and lower end 'of the shank of the jaw D, as shown.
The jaw G has a hole through it, directly opposite the hole through the jaw D, for the passage of the bolt E.
The bolt E has a screw-thread cut on its end, and the brush H is clamped between the jaws C and D by screwing up a thumb-nut, I, on said bolt E.
The brush H may be formed by placing the l broom-corn or other material of which the brush is to be made side by side, after it has been cut to the proper length, in sufcient quantities to form a brush of the proper length and thickness to fill the cavity between the jaws G and D.
The corn or other material may be secured in the proper relative position with respect to each other by sewing them with cords or in any other suitable way; or they may be placed separately between the jaws C and D, as may be most convenient, care being taken to have all the brush of the same length, so that the brush when completed may have the semicircular form represented in the drawings.
By this means such a form will be given to the brush H that when completed it will have a form convenient for brushing either the soles or sides of the boots or shoes, cleaning them from all the dust, mud, or snow that may be attached to them.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An apparatus for cleaning boots and shoes, formed by combining the hinged clasp A C D with the brush H, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
