MATCH IGNITER.
No. 560,891. Patented May 26, R896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS O, CLAUSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATCH-IGNITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,891, dated May 26, 1896.
C Application led January 27, 1896. Serial No. 576,954. (No model.)
To all whom. t may concern.-
Beit known that I, HANS O. CLAUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Igniters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lWIy'invention relates to a novel construction in a match-igniter, the object being to provide a device of this kind which will prevent the so-called parlor-matches from eX- ploding and scattering the burning particles when drawn over the surface thereof; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a front elevation of a match-igniter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Referring now to said drawings, Aindicates a plate of any suitable material, preferably sheet metal, provided with upwardly-extending iianges B on each side. A piece of wirecloth or similar closely-perforated material C is stretched across the upper edges of said flanges B, being securedqthereto in any suitable manner. In the instance illustrated I have shown said wire-cloth C secured to said flanges B by bending the latter over on themselves and clamping the ends of the wirecloth between them. By means of this construction a space is left between the plateI A and the wire-cloth C, so that when a match is drawn over the rough surface of the said wire-cloth C the explosion can take place in any direction owing to the openness of said wire-cloth. As the explosion of the match usually occurs at the point which is subjected to the friction, it will be obvious that if the same is free to explode in any direction the same will not react upon the end of the match and blow the same to pieces. Besides this advantage the wire-cloth offers no sharp edges, like sandpaper, to out off pieces from the end of the match, which fly about and are very dangerous to the eyes.
I claim as my invention- A match-igniter comprising a plate preferably of sheet metal, provided with upwardlyextending iianges on each side thereof, the outer ends of said flanges being folded over upon the outer faces of the same, and a strip of wire-cloth mounted upon said flanges and having its ends clamped between the folded edges thereof, so as to leave an open space between said wire-cloth and said plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
HANS O. CLAUSEN.
