CARTRIDGE-BELT.

Be it known that I, DENNIS LANE, of the city of Kirkwood, St. Louis county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Belts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to an improved cartridge-belt, and is an improvement on a cartridge-belt, a patent for which was issued to me on the 15th day of March, 1892, No. 470,840; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of my improved belt. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. l is a view in perspective of one of the resilient segmental clasps of which I make use in carrying out my invention. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which the holders of my improved belt are constructed.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, l indicates an ordinary belt, which is constructed of leather, cloth, or other iiexible material. The cartridge-holders 2 that are located uponthe belt are stamped in blank form from sheets of brass, aluminium, or other non-rusting metal, and said holders appear when in blank of rectangular form having rounded corners, and from one edge of the blank depends a portion 3. Suitable rivet-holes 4L are formed in the blank-adjacent the edges thereof and in alinement with-the depending portions 3.

By a special tool or suitable machinery the blanks are bent into segmental form and the side edges 4t of the clasps so formed are bent outwardly to form rounded lips for the cartridges to engage against as they are forced into said clasps. The depending portions 3 of the blanks are rolled or curved upwardly, as indicated by 5, in order to form a lip or projection for the lower rim of the cartridge Passing enof the segmental segmental clasps 6, the same being to rest upon when in position. tirely around the bodies clasps are constructed of some resilient material, such as steel. The clasps 6 are engaged around the clasps or holders constructed ofthe blanks 2, and said holders are attached to the belt 1 by means of rivetsA 7 or in any suitable manner. When so arranged, the clasps 6 are located between the rivets 7, securing the clasps or holders constructed of the blanks 2. By means of a punch or like tool a point 8 is formed in each of the clasps 6, said point 8 engaging in the material of which the belt l is constructed, thus assisting in holding said clasps in proper position. The ends of the clasps 6 lie immediately in the rear of the outwardly-turned edges or lips 4.

Instead of making the entire clasp out of steel, as shown in the patent previously mentioned, I make the main clasp or holder of a non-rusting material and place a steel clasp or band around the same. Should the entire clasp or holder be constructed of brass, it

would not have the necessary resiliency to properly hold the cartridge when located therein, and to cause the proper resiliency the steel band is placed around said clasp or holder.

This construction is simple, inexpensive, is a design easily manufactured, and presents a neat and finished appearance.

By extending the lips e the entire length of the front edges of the clasp or holder there are no sharp edges presented that might injure the hand or person of the wearer of the cartridge-belt when the same is in use.

I claim--n In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible belt, a series of segmental clasps or holders fixed to said belt and having lips formed on their forward edges and having projections formed on their lower ends for the lower ends of the shells to rest against,

and bands of resilient material passing entirely around the segmental clasps or holders and having points protrudingfrom their backs to engage in the flexible belt.
