CHARLES ERLANGER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,268, dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed January 29, 1896. Serial No. 577,284. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ERLANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will -enable others skilled in the art to which it fully described, illustrated in the drawings,
and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts on both views, Figure lis a view of a pair of apron-overalls provided with detachable fastening devices according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the elastic fastener, the lower terminals upturned to compose opposite button-loops permanently retained of required size by metallic straps, the upper overturned end having button-loop maintained of required dimension by metallic strap wrapped over the strip of which the suspender-end is formed.
In the drawings, A is the shoulder-band folded over rearwardly at a, and in practice continuously extended, to be turned over and connected to the front of the apron-overall in any suitable manner. The rear overturn of the band A is securely held in position by an eyelet-button B; but any suitable means for fastening said overturn may be employed without departing from the purview and scope of my invention.
O represents su Spender-ends made of a continuous length of elastic material, the lower terminal ends being upturned to form loops c c, which are retained permanently in position by overlying metallic strips wrapped around the upper ends of said loops and compressed thereon by suitable mechanism. The elastic material of which the suspender-ends C are composed is folded over at the median point of its length, and at a given distance below said overturn a metallic band is wrapped around the elastic material, thus leaving an open eye c', which in practice is adapted to loop over the button B or similar device and can be removed when the garment is required to be washed.
By formation of the described upper and lower loops held permanently in position by metallic folded straps in the manner set forth, there is no risk of displacement of any parts of the devices when the garment is on the person, which, as is well known, is subjected to great strain and tension by workmen who wear such apparel.
Having thus fully describedv my invention and the manner of its operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is-
In a garment of the character described, having shoulder-strap folded over rearwardly, said folded portion being rigidly held in position by metallic eyelet extending through each layer of the fabric, and having at its outer face button-disk, in combination with suspenderends composed of a continuous length of elastic material, each lower terminal of which is upturned to form button-loops, retained in position by strips of metal passing over said loops at their upper terminals, the material forming the suspender-ends being overturned at median point of its length, forming an upper central eye or loop maintained of requiredV size, by metallic strip folded over the extending lengths of said suspender-end, below said central loop or eye whereby it is adapted to be removed as desired from the button-disk of the shoulder-band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
