Description

W. Q FURNI- (No Model.)
OUGHTON. TUBE LEG.
Patented Feb. 11, 1896.
UNITED STATES V ATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM G. BOUGHTON, OF FROSTBURG, MARYLAND.
FURNITURE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,578, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed April 4, 1895. Serial No. 544,443. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BOUGH- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frostburg, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Furniture-Leg, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to furniture, and particularly to legs and means for securing them to the frames of tables, chairs, and similar articles, the object in View being to provide means for arranging a leg either inside or outside of the frame without material change of construction.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a leg and contiguous portion of a frame, showing the leg arranged in the reentrant angle. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the construction from the inside. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the leg and contiguous portion of the frame, showing the leg arranged upon the exterior angle. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The extremities of the frame-bars 1 and 2 are secured together by means of a cornerblock 3 fitted in the inner or re-entrant angle formed by such parts, the perpendicularlydisposed sides of the corner-block being provided with vertical webs 4 fitting in channels 5 in the inner surfaces of the frame-bars. The exterior angle formed by the frame-bars is cut away to form a Hat surface 6, which corresponds in area and isparallel with the inner surface 6 of the corner-block. The upper end of the supporting-leg is halved or cut away to fit and bear against the inner fiat surface of the corner-block, the same being held inplace by a bolt 7, which is secured to the frame and extends through a horizontal opening 8 in the leg, where it is engaged by a nut 9. The shoulder 10 of the leg bears against the under edges of the frame-bars and thereby supports the weight of the frame, whereby the fastening-bolt simply holds the parts in operative positions. The upper reduced portion 11 of the leg is flanged at its side edges, as shown at 12, to engage the beveled edges 13 of the corner-block.
In Fig. 5 the leg is shown arranged outside of or in contact with the exterior angle of the frame. The inner surface of the reduced upper end of the leg bears against the flat surface 6, and the flanges 12 bear against the surfaces of the frame-bars and thus form break-joints.
\Vhen the leg is arranged in the re-entrant angle a cap 14: of any preferred ornamental design is secured upon the frame to cover the fiat surface 6. This cap may be secured in place by screws 15, or by any other suitable means.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim isg 1. The combination of a frame, having corner-blocks arranged in its re-entrant angles and corresponding in plan with the exterior angles of the frame, legs cut away at their upper ends to fit the exterior or interior angles of the frame, and means for securing -the legs in position, substantially as specified.
2. In a table, the combination of a frame, corner blocks arranged in the re entrant angles formed by the end bars and having fiat inner faces, the exterior angles of the frame being cut away to form surfaces parallel and coextensive with the inner surfaces of the corner-blocks, supporting-legs cut away at their upper ends to fit either of said parallel surfaces, and a bolt engaging said parts to secure them at the desired adjustment, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WVM. Gr. BOUGHTON.
Witnesses:
JOHN H. SIGGERS, HENRY HOMAN.
